Choosing a dorm!

My S is a freshman at Syracuse and is in a LC located in Marion. Marion is an older, small dorm - just 3 floors built in the 50"s - but he really likes it because it is centrally located. There are numerous learning communities at Syracuse and my S really enjoys the one that he is in - plus he likes being in a smaller dorm. VF12426 suggests that an incoming student pick a LC based on his/her interest and not dorm location. My S had both those things in mind when he opted for the LC he is in - but there is no guarantee that the LC will be in the same location the following year. VF12426 also suggests that the kids in an LC can seem to be a tight group - and this is my S’s experience. Although he is in a major where he is with other kids in his major every day and enjoys his classes with them, he seems to hang out with the LC kids more.

I’m a freshman who just completed his first semester at SU, and I actually live in Shaw. The dorm’s pretty nice, as you really don’t have to leave for anything at all. If you want a study area, there are two classrooms you can use, as well as a few “study nooks” or whatever you want to call them. You also have the convenience of a dining hall being in your dorm, but what I’ve found is that I tend to head over to Ernie Davis because they offer a greater variety of food and (IMO) the food tastes better. Ernie also has more “specialty meals” like cheeseburger subs and such that other dining halls don’t necessarily have.

There appear to be four room types in Shaw: open triples, open doubles, split doubles and singles. I live in an open double, and it’s pretty freaking big. We can comfortably fit about five people in a room before it starts to feel a little claustrophobic. Singles are about same size as a double, which is really nice.

Overall, I like living in Shaw, as it’s pretty close to campus (I can cross through Life Sciences and be on the Quad in two minutes) and it’s kind of all inclusive with the dining hall and study areas. The area around Shaw isn’t sketchy either, compared to other dorms like BBB and Sadler.

You also have three (or so) LCs in Shaw: WISE (Women in Science and Engineering), the L. C. Smith LC (for Engineers) and the Jewish Learning Community.

One of my roommate’s friends happens to live in Haven, and he doesn’t really like it for some reason.

Hope that helps.

I am a freshman this year and I live in BBB. Honestly, I would live here again. Its a great atmosphere, great food, and really not that bad of a walk. Also the quad shuttle which is a bus that takes you to pretty much every on campus building is super convienent to catch and allows you to not walk anywhere.

Also in the building is a gym, which is so nice on those snowy days, as well as an after hours cafeteria with burger king. Its also close to marshall street for good shopping and really gives you that college atmosphere.

As for the people who say its sketchy, i honestly don’t think that these people have ever walked down there to see it. I will say that it is on the edge of campus it does border the ‘bad part of town’ but I have never ever felt unsafe in my building or walking back to it even late at night. I guess you could say that the people who live in what everyone is calling the ghetto…stay in the ghetto. I have never felt uncomfortable like i said before.

Another thing, the dorms were just renovated. I live in a great split double, its spacious with soooo much storage. I have so much clothes and they fit in my room. The closets are huge, and there is shelving all above the beds and behind the headboard. The bathrooms are new, the only complaint i have would be that there is not a common area on each floor. It makes it very difficult to work on homework with other people.

If i had to pick where i want to live next year, i would say watson, dellplain, shaw, or BBB again.

oh and you can pick your roomate but not your building :(

i hope this helps, sorry its so long

Thanks a lot guys, these info were really helpful
I’m gonna be going to Syracuse this year majoring in architecture :)

what i know is you can state your preferences… but mostly it’s by random. however if upperclassmen decides not to live on campus and your preference has free dorms… than you might might MIGHT get it…:)

how do we state our preferences? I don’t think they allowed us to state our preferences in the dorm application.
