So, I am of course a pre-med student (hint by my username) and have always wanted to be in medicine since I was a kid. Fast forward to undergrad, and I have no idea what I want to do. I know that people tend to change their minds in Clinical rotations in med school. I am interested in sports, emergency, family Medicine, and natural medicine. I would consider myself to be the type of doctor that wouldn’t prescribe medicine that is not necessary. I always see doctors giving meds to cure or control something that could be done without it. I’m not too keen on any surgery either. What field do you guys suggest or more so think I should consider getting into?!
You have no idea what practicing medicine is actually like yet so of course you have no idea about what future specialty you want to pursue. That’s what shadowing is for. And frankly that’s what clinical rotations in med school are for–to learn first hand what field one wants to pursue. On the average, a med student will change their mind about their future specialty 3 times during med school.
Let me begin by saying you’re indulging in HUGE cliché in your characterization of how physicians behave. No doctor wants to be prescribing unnecessary medications or surgeries. Most doctors aren’t pill pushers; most surgeons aren’t giving their patients the bum rush into the OR.
Have you ever considered osteopathic medicine (DO)–which seems to align better with your philosophy & interests?
All I can say is keep an open mind.
BTW, Sport medicine is a fellowship level specialty. (Something you’ll pursue only after completing a residency.) You can enter sports med thru emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics or PM&R.
Let me suggest that you focus on gaining admission to medical school and volunteering at a medical clinic or facility. You will have hundreds if not thousands of activities and experiences from now, through medical school, to eventually formulate the field of medicine you ultimately pursue.
