Choosing an Engineering Discipline

Hi all,
I’m in need of advice in choosing the discipline of engineering I want to go into, as I’m very indecisive and have pro’s and con’s for almost every major. I’m attending a university in which I have a scholarship for engineering, so I basically have to choose within the realm of engineering or computer science.

To give a short background, I’ve always excelled in math and science, particularly in aspects in which I can use a known formula to obtain an unknown result (ex. calculus, stats). Since I was a child I’ve been very hands on and loved to build things, such as legos, blocks, Kinex etc., and loved creating hypothetical design of cities, houses, interiors and the like. I’ve also held a strong interest in biology and have always loved performing experiments in the lab. Additionally, I love to follow the rules/have guidance or a specific set of directions to achieve a goal. I’m also a people person, and enjoy working both alone and in groups.

I have considered mechanical, as I enjoy the hands on aspects and creativity of the job, however when I look at other mechanical engineers, I don’t seem to compare. (Btw I’m a girl which was the largest difference when looking into this field.) I have never held interest in taking apart machines/engines or building actual parts from scratch, nor do I think I’m especially good at it. I can follow a specific set of known steps, but I’m unsure of my interest in machines and how they work, and I’m not a highly technical person, so the creation of new machines has never really interested me. I have however shown an interest in the biomedical field, which you can go into with a mechanical degree. I’ve always been fascinated by biomedical technologies and engineering for healthcare, however my university doesn’t offer a biomedical degree.

I am also in between Civil and Industrial. I have taken an interest in civil because of the design aspect, and creation of a more fluid and economical environment, and for similar reasons just applied elsewhere, industrial.

If you have taken on any of these majors/work in these fields/could give input on what the work really entails, the skills it requires, and what you enjoy about the work you do, that would be very helpful. I don’t want to make the wrong decision, so anything will help. Thank you.

There’s no kind of biological/biomedical/biochemical engineering at your university? How about chemical engineering? I think these fields could suit you.

Also, you could take different discipline electives at university. For example, a civil design elective, a mechanics elective, etc. This would help you see if you enjoy any of these fields.

Schools that do not offer Biomed sometimes have biomed tracts inside Mechanical. You need to look over all the engineering elective courses to see if they do
