I've been accepted as a transfer student (incoming sophomore) to Connecticut College and McGill University (Faculty of Arts). I am an East Asian Studies major, focusing in Chinese. I understand these are two VERY different schools but looking for some advice about the pros and cons of each school.

As I see it...

McGill
+more classes
+Montreal/Canada
+better range of choices for off-campus living
+diversity (ethnicity, nationality, politically)
+better global reputation
+cost ~ $25k+
-weather
-bureaucracy
-unable to get into classes
-least accesible professors
-impersonal due to size of student body

Conn
+small classes
+60/40 Women/Men (I am a guy)
+internship program
+strong/successful alumni network
-cost ~ $50k+
-New London
-Housing
-small size (bubble)
-limited to China and Japan (no classes on other asian countries)
-limited global reputation
-nescac-ey scene (homogenous prep-school kids with money)

I am also very interested in adding Computer Science as a second major or minor, is that possible at McGill within the Faculty of Arts?

*Any information you can provide will be very helpful, I have 20 days to decide or else my spot at McGill will be given to someone else.

Are you planning on grad school or just undergrad? I’d recommend Connecticut if you’re looking to attend grad school (but I’m very biased towards LACs, as pretty much anyone on this board could tell you).

I won’t say that I’m planning on going to grad school but I’m certainly open to the possibility. I’m really only interested in an MBA or perhaps a MA in something related to Asian Studies

You didn’t mention whether there is a cost difference.

I would go with McGill by far. East Asian Studies is far from my area of expertise, but it seems like a fairly specialized major and the course options at McGill would be very valuable.

Thank you! I totally forgot to include cost in my comparison bullet points - it is one of the most important factors: McGill is roughly half the cost of Conn College.

The better global reputation of McGill only matters if you plan to work outside of the United States for a significant amount of time.

Like you said, they are very different. Do you want a small liberal arts college environment, or a large university environment? I am also biased towards LACs, since I went to one. However, McGill is much cheaper and is probably better for your East Asian studies major, especially if you are interested in countries outside of China and Japan.

I’d go with McGill. You can even get to know French in the process. Even McGill is huge, there are probably not that many East Asian studies majors.

The reputational difference is just too huge, espeically if you plan to work in Asia.
