choosing between sociology and classics. HELP!

this is long. beware!

im a 17 year old female, applying to college soon, and im putting a lotttt of thought into my major now. i know i dont have to decide, people change their minds a lot, i can apply undecided, etc etc. however id really prefer to have a major when i got there and i think i have a better shot of getting in if i have something in mind rather than joining the herd and just going undecided. after college im interested in going to medical school, so i want to major in something i like. ive narrowed it down.

so im thinking about classics. ive never actually shown any interest whatsoever in roman/greek language or civilization. but im actually thinking i might like it. its a really well rounded major and im interested in learning latin. i dont know if im up to not only learning the language(s), but taking the classes. i have no idea if i'd like roman/greek history. honestly, the illiad and the odyssey bored me to effing tears. but i dont know. i cant describe why its so interesting, i think it might be the different aspects. id be learning a language, the history of a civilization, the foundations of modern law and government, the roots of our own language. i mean like... theres so much in one major. also i think it would challenge me. even though i am incessantly lazy, i think deep down i want to be challenged because high school really hasnt done it for me. not to mention classics majors have shown to have a better shot of getting into medical school. (from what i've read). overall im impressed by the major.

on the other hand, there's sociology. i think i could be a born sociologist. i pick apart the social aspects of our society for fun when im stopped at a red light. to make a long story short, i like it and i know i like it. so i'm afraid to veer from what i know.

if i sound like i dont know what im talking about, i dont, so feel free to correct me. i would love the input of others. if im over-analyzing this entire thing, tell me haha. and if you read all that, you get a gold star. i just want to know what others think. thanks. =]

To be honest, it sounds like you're more in love with the idea of a classics major than the material it actually covers. It sounds like you have a natural passion for sociology, just do that. If you didn't like the Iliad and the Odyssey, you'd probably find yourself along for a really rough ride with Classics.

Don't worry about who has a shot at getting into medical school -- your GPA and extra-curricular activities are what get you in; adcoms do NOT care what your major was, especially if it's clear you had passion for it. The statistics you see fail to account for a large number of factors that are difficult to quantify, and those trends aren't something you should base your decision on.
