Choosing between the Florida schools

My son is a rising senior in HS. I don't know his State-adjusted GPA, but his HS GPA is 4.2. His SAT score is 1290 and he is waiting to find out how he did the last time he took it. He doesn't really know what he wants to do, but he is definitely a more Liberal Arts guy than a math/science guy. He has some interest in a career in Film, but he could just as easily end up in Law.

From his stats, I suspect that he might get accepted into UF, UM and possibly the Honors program at FSU. I say this because he is a national hispanic scholar candidate and because he writes very well.

I am aware of the magazine rankings, but I do not put much stock into their methodology. I know that UF has a longer and more distinguished history in the sciences, but my son is looking for a superior Liberal Arts education. If my son were interested in science or math, he would be applying to my alma mater, Georgia Tech. He will be applying to schools outside of Florida, but I would prefer to discuss the in-State schools in this thread.

Knowing what you know about my son, would you recommend the Honors program at FSU or regular admission to either UM or UF? He has visited Eckerd College, but dismissed it quickly. He prefers a larger school with more on-campus activity.

Let's try to keep the 'Noles v. 'Canes v. Gators out of this. I don't care about sports teams. I don't care about networks and connections. I don't care about school pride. All I care about is developing my teenaged son into a well-educated, thinking man. He will likely continue his education in graduate school or film school and will get his chance to develop his contacts there.

Which Florida program will likely provide my son with the best education? I will post this thread on all three University boards, so let's try to keep the trolling to a minimum.

Thank you, in advance. It is not an easy process.

If he wants to do film, I’d send him to FSU.

Btw, what was your major at GaTech? I got a master’s in engineering from there.

UF, FSU, and Miami are all great institutions that provide different experiences.

I would say he has a good chance of being admitted into UF, but is not a lock. Alot of applicants choose UF because it provides a top tier quality education and is extremely affordable. 2nd best overall in the USA according to Kiplinger.

UF is particularly strong in Engineering, Business, pre-med, building construction, life sciences, physics, accounting, health majors, nursing, journalism, and architecture. FSU is particularly strong in meteorology, sociology, political science, communications, humanities, music, film, dance, social sciences, hospitality, and education. UM is particularly strong in marine sciences, meteorology, health studies, business, pre-med, and communications.

The best public liberal arts college in the state is New College of Florida.

In terms of pre-law it does not really matter what school he chooses. Law Schools only care about LSAT Score & GPA.

If your son wants to study film: then it is FSU hands down

He is thinking about Film, but has not committed yet. The FSU Film school is truly excellent, but I would prefer that he get a liberal arts degree first.

I majored in Biology and went off to med school after my junior year. I am proud of going to Tech, but I don’t see it as the right fit for my son.

Thank you very much for the input. We have not seen the New College yet. I guess its small size has taken it off of our radars. What can you tell me about it?

[New College of Florida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](New College of Florida - Wikipedia)

New College is really small…smaller than my high school. I went on a tour there and decided it wasn’t for me, even though it’s still a really cool school (and it has a nice location by the bay and all).

new college is an excellent school, but nearly exact opposite of UF in almost every way. The people, environment, community, and methodologies of the school are unique to say the least.

that being said, its one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. if your son is looking for a liberal arts degree, new college will give him the best in the state. if he intends to actually have a major, however, its not recommended. moreover, if he doesn’t intend on going to graduate school/professional school, an undergraduate degree from new college would be kind of useless compared to a specific degree.

on the topic of UF, i would be careful not hinge everything on UF or UM. He’s deep into the bottom 25% of 2009 accepted student in terms of both SAT and GPA (unless we’re talking UF/BF GPA, which is miles away from district GPA). Of course, hopefully his SAT score will go up.

Doesn’t FSU have a 1350 minimum for the honors college?

I’m not sure maybe it is lower than 1350 but you are taking a leap of faith to automatically assume he will get accepted to all these schools after the most competitive year for college admissions in Florida history.

http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/frprofile.html

I guess that your are right; I should not assume that he will get accepted. However, I suspect that his SAT will improve. He did not sleep much the night before his first SAT. We will have to see how he does.

What is his SAT score out of 2400? UF now factors in the writing section.

And FSU honors requires at least a 1910/2400 on the SAT.

His SAT is 1900/2400. He misses by 10. Hopefully, his newest score will make the grade.

^^^ I got invited to FSU Honors with an 1850, not sure why but I guess it doesn’t matter too much.

^FSU weighs course work more than SAT scores. What did you take?

Idk, I only had 5 APs total and a 3.6

1- 3.7 or higher FSU-weighted high school GPA
2- A qualifying test score, which may be either 1850 on the SAT (combined critical reading, math, writing) or 28 on the ACT
3- Class rank in the top ten percent of their high school graduating class

that’s admission by petition

Which still gets you accepted the majority of the time.

UF Honors doesn’t have this admit by petition nonsense.

We just got his SAT score. He got a 2030/2400. I still am not sure about his GPA. I am guessing that his HS GPA is about 4.2 - 4.3. If you assume that the recalculated GPA will knock off a half point…he is at 3.8.
