FSU (honors) vs UF

I am posting this in the FSU subforum as well.

Basically, I need help deciding between attending the FSU honors college, and UF. I'm a pretty good, hardworking student and I'm pretty sure I'd get accepted into both FSU and UF. I have a really strong GPA with tons of AP classes, but my SAT scores are in the 1900s...meaning I would most likely get into the FSU honors program, but only the regular UF program.

Basically, which one would be better? I am looking to major in law or engineering, not too sure yet. Also, after my first 4 years I would like to apply to a better school for my masters and such, so which would look better on a transcript between the two?

Thanks for any help.

to forestall another FSU/UF debate, the difference between which school you choose is negligible. honors is a good thing to have, but the primary benifits of honors are smaller classes and more resources, not necessarily what your transcript says. whether you attend as an honors student or not, you have the opportunity to graduate in honors, which is much more significant.

the deciding factor should be dependent on which school you think you’ll get along best at. have you gone on campus tours yet?

For engineering, UF would be much better. The honors doesn’t really make your transcript ‘look better’ as you can graduate with honors if you keep a certain GPA.

For pre-law in FSU honors there may be a debate, but for engineering, UF is the clear choice. 'nuf sed.

I’ve done a tour of UF, but not FSU. And to be completely honest, UF was nice but I got a big impression that the Gainesville experience may not be as exhilarating as the Tally one, since UF is the only thing in Gainesville. The campus was nice, nonetheless. And smaller class sizes is appealing, but I’m not sure yet.

Any other input? and thanks

No brainer where you should go if you’re interested in engineering.

You don’t have a very good picture of gainesville. Here is a piece from the NY Times to give you a better idea:

[American Journeys - Gainesville, Fla. - Home to the University of Florida, Museums, Gardens and Florida History - NYTimes.com](http://travel.nytimes.com/2009/03/06/travel/escapes/06American.html)

Law and engineering are just 2 majors I’m thinking of now. But who knows? I’m just a high school senior…many people change their minds. What would be the better place to be in if 2 years down the line I feel like I don’t want to major in either of those…

Well it doesn’t really matter where you go if you end up going to law school. UF is better for most majors while FSU is better at some fine arts majors. Engineering and law are pretty different and if you major in engineering, the likely hit your GPA will take will make it much harder to get into law school.

FSU is known for its fine arts program whereas UF is known for programs like pre med and engin. Based on what you said you want to major in it seems like you would stay in the UF category even if you decide to change your major

Also a lot of the people here are forgetting that you can still get into UF honors after your first fall semester. Its called lateral admission which doesn’t look at your SAT or ACT. Look it up.

Good Luck

^Partial myth.

FSU is currently nationally ranked in quite a few areas.
More currently, see: [FSU Highlights](Rankings | Florida State University)

unless you’re into the government party scene, there isn’t much more to do in tally than there is in gainesvillle. if you’re into music, gainesville gets more shows than tally does. i’m not sure what you mean by ‘exhillerating’.

p2n, why are you posting links to rankings when you are suggesting to the original poster to ignore ranking differences between the two? You’re not trying to start a ranking comparison are you?? :)

A 1900 is pretty low in regards to admission to UF. Unless you have a great GPA, which you didn’t state specifically, it would be a rather large assumption to think you are even admitted.

Lets wait to see where you are admitted before starting the proverbial UF vs. FSU bash fest.

IntangibleGator,

I don’t mean to brag but I’d like to think I have a really high chance of getting admitted into UF. Yes, my GPA is very high, not sure what it is exactly, but my grades consist of all A’s with AP schedules. My father was a Gator, and my uncle was even a teacher there for a short while. My SAT isn’t too high, but I know several people that had a lot lower scores and lot lower GPAs than I did. I’m not a good SAT-taker, but with my grades I belong at a school like UNC or UPenn, but due to this economy I have to stay in state. Thus, I’m just trying to see what would be better between UF/FSU honors.

I know what you mean when you say you’re not a good SAT taker but to attend a school like UNC or Penn, you definitely need at least a 2100 on SATs.

Being a “legacy” gets you maybe 1 point in admissions ranking. Not much. This has become the trend at both UF and FSU. It ain’t what it used to be.

UNC? Maybe. Penn, no way.

Alright this thread isn’t about UNC/Penn, I just pulled those out of random cause if admissions were grades only I could definitely get in both of those. But with the economy and relatively low SAT, I need help deciding between fsu honors/uf.

andr3w216…there is no way anyone on this forum can answer your question…it has morphed into something vague and non-specific since your range of potential majors spans (what seems like) all possibilities. We also can’t know how “important” the honors program would be to you as an individual…it might make you thrive or it might not.
In general UF has the better programs and the better students. But FSU has some specific stand-out programs too. So you are going to have to figure out what is best for you…and I don’t think anyone on these boards is going to be able to do that for you.
