Well, I decided to get a laptop. Thanks to all who replied to my previous thread. Anyways, I have another dilemma. Should I buy a Dell Vostro 1400 or a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop? I'm choosing between those two.

Actually, not the Dell Inspiron 1521, I meant Dell Inspiron 1420. Thanks!

Get the one with better hardware, the vostro is pretty much an inspiron painted plack.

vostro is business line, so it should have much better build quality (and of course it costs more). also should be lighter compared to an equivalent inspiron. i've never seen one, though, i just know that latitude quality > inspiron quality, and latitude is a business line too. actually seeing/handling a vostro would help.

of course, if its gonna sit on your desk just about all the time, then just get an inspiron. business notebooks can just be banged around a little more and are easier to carry around than a consumer-line equivalent.

The inspiron. You can configure it more towards a home user, and it's built about as sturdy as the vostro. I spent a week researching the two before buying the inspiron.

the vostro is likely vastly superior - end of story

to be perfectly honest every inspiron I have used has been built quite poorly and feels like it is about to break at any moment - i have never used a vostro but dell business has generally had much better build quality

i'm utterly amazed at how well the damn things sell, i think it is because of the direct to consumer model

If possible, get the one that has more
- memory (DDR1 or DDR2, 1 or 2GB)
- hard drive (maybe 80GB, 120GB, or 160GB)
....If you have an iPod, the songs/videos stored in the laptop will take some space.
- make sure the CPU is new (like Intel Core™2 Duo or Centrino)
- at least 2 or more USB ports (they are very useful)

make sure it has a high ghz. if your looking for graphics then a good video card. personally i prefer AMDs..

Cache level is more important that the highest ghz.
