Choosing UNC over in-state

I posted this in the "College Search & Selection" section of College Confidential but thought I might get a better response here. Thanks in advance!

I live in Virginia and have been accepted early action to both UVA and UNC-CH. I like Chapel Hill a shade more than UVA but... I have the Virginia pre-paid education bond thing. This means that my tuition at UVA would be automatically paid for and all I'd have to pay is room and board. It has really come down to whether I can justify the cost of attending UNC over UVA. What are some pro's and cons of UNC? And, which would you choose in my position and why?

UVA. Money.

Brevity is the soul of wit. Thanks for your advice!

Have you visited both campuses and everything? If not, I recommend you do that.

UVA is a nice school (I didn’t like it, personally, but it is a nice school lol) and it’s kinda like a college town because it’s way out in wherever & I think a lot of the things were kinda built around the fact that college students are nearby. I probably have a good amount of friends that go there.

I was considering UVA, went to visit, didn’t like it for whatever reason, didn’t even bother looking at their decision.

If money is really important, then UVA. It’s a good, reputable university. But, if you have some wiggle room to go to UNC… campus visits! Lol.

Good luck :D

Both are excellent schools ranked similarly (UVA holding the edge - depends a bit on what you want to study, I suppose). Both have grand histories and are located in excellent college towns. If both offer a satisfactory course of study and:

UNC = $$$$
UVA = $$

Spend less for the same education, the choice is pretty easy.

Hello conused! I am almost in the exact same situation as you are.

I was accepted early action to both, and I have narrowed down my decision to UVA and UNC. UNC actually gave me a slightly better financial offer as an out of state student than UVA did as an in-state student.

Since the financial costs are about the same, and they both are excellent in the fields I am interested in, does anyone have any advice as to which one to attend? I will be attending the admitted-student days for both schools later this month but I am struggling to make a decision. It may just come down to which campus I like better, seeing as they are virtually tied in every imaginable category.

Edit: And thanks in advance for any advice! I am trying to collect as much information about the two schools as possible.

hey conused and alphaguy5!

first off, congrats on uva and unc, both fantastic schools. i was in the same position y’all were in when i was a senior, except i was also raised a MASSIVE carolina fan as my entire extended family went to carolina and i grew up going to games and such, but am a va resident. it was the hardest decision of my life - many tears and tense discussions, but looking back i can’t believe it was. my experience at u.va couldn’t have been better and i love it here so much. both unc and uva are mor esimilar schools then they are different, and you’ll have a great time at either. that being said, if carolina is more expensive i do not think it’s worth it. you will have a very similar experience and the degree strength is very similar, with u.va having the slight edge from an instate va. vs. nc point of view, even in the opinion of many carolina alums. actually i know pretty many people at u.va from north carolina. i love both schools but am extremely happy with my decision!

good luck to y’all! let me know if you have any specific questions about either or comparing the two
