Choreographing For Musical Theatre Auditions...

Hi. I'm struggling to choreograph dance routines for my audition tape that I'm planning to send to Sheridan college (it's in canada) because I live in Korea. I'm not sure which music I should use to the dance.
They want me to either do ballet or jazz (jazz i prefer) and I really need to get things started but selecting the music for it is the biggest obstacle rite now. Can anybody help me?
It would be awesome if you would tell me what kind of music they use in the actual audition. Thank you!

s_christine88,
I wouldn't worry too much about the music. Just choose a musical theatre piece you can choreograph to in such a way that shows off what your dance skills and individual style are. My daughter used a solo she choreographed to a Wicked song at one of her auditions--and got accepted. While she would never have sung a Wicked song at her audition, she apparently didn't feel that the "rule" applied to dance. Somebody posted on here recently about the music that was used at a CCM audition this year. I don't remember what it was, but I recognized that it was radically different from the music they used last year at the LA unifieds: from The Music Man! I am not answering as an expert, but hopefully somebody who is can help you out! Also, it would be great if somebody who has auditioned at Sheridan could respond!

Another option is to ask your dance instructor. My D worked with one of her instructors privately over the summer and the fee was not too bad, (about the same as a voice lesson.) A jazz teacher would have several routines that she could easily put together for you or at least give you some great song ideas, and if it was someone you've worked with in the past, they'd know your ability too.

mtmommy - the song that was used at CCM was Run, Freedom, Run from Urinetown

I love that song.

Thanks, daae. Yup, that's pretty different from The Music Man!
