I know this topic has been addressed in the past but am looking for updated information.

What are normal/acceptable practices as regards Christmas gifts to BS teachers and/or staff? Obviously there are too many people that help your kid on a daily basis to make giving each and every one a gift. But, I was thinking the advisor (at least) should be accknowledged in some way. The trouble is, I can't think of any ideas that seem to be the "way to go"....well, actually the problem is that I overthink every idea I come up with. So I am turning to my friends at CC! What has worked in the past? What should I steer away from? Or do most wait until end of school year for gifting....

You should check to see if your child’s school has a policy about gifts to faculty and staff. Many do. I prefer to give gifts to the school in honor of a particular teacher or teachers. Depending on your school some ideas could be

A gift to the annual fund
A gift to an endowed fund that supports an area of interest to the faculty member
A gift in support of an extra curricular with which the faculty member is involved (expenses of the debate team, for example)
Chapel flowers for a week
Flowers for a public area of the school, such as admissions, the faculty room, department office
A book or books for the library

If you want to give a gift directly to the teacher, in addition to gift cards, potted bulbs, holiday flowering plants, really nice hand soap, soy or beeswax candles are all nice gifts that I think most people enjoy.

Thanks, Classicalmama… I couldn’t find that thread again so am happy for the link! Am still going back and forth on this… I like the Christmas ornament idea… maybe coupled with a coffe or gas gift card… will run these ideas past my kid!

Here’s another suggestion: if the dorm parent has small children, consider giving them a gift instead… when I was a dorm parent, I got a lot of candles, etc and more baked goods than we could ever eat in a month! But I loved it when I received something for my daughter, who was 4/5 at the time. Dorm parents are usually on a small budget and Christmas gifts for the little ones are very helpful and SO appreciated.
