Christopher Newport University

Has anyone visited or have any information on this school and its program? Thank you!!

I also am interested in this school and info about it. We got some things mailed to us and it looks interesting. Think it’s def on our list for a safety option

@theaterwork I know you have an extra year to go than I do,but it seems we are looking for similar schools:)
It is non-audition but you can audition for scholarship (like Muhlenberg) It seems to be right on the water and the facilities are gorgeous!!! Just started researching it so would love to hear from anyone who has done more research or visited.

I live less than a mile from CNU, and I drive or bike by/thru campus daily. It’s not on the water, as stated above. (It’s very close to the James River. Students walk by my house to get to a small beach.) Campus is nice— very nice! It’s in an upscale area of town, with many businesses within walking distance. (2 grocery stores, Moe’s 7-11, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Panera, sub shops, Mexican, Chinese, pizza/Italian, etc.) They are actively building new facilities and the dorms are NICE. The campus is tasteful and immaculate. There are 3 theaters on campus, including a black box. Look up the Ferguson Center-- it gets touring acts year-round. This is a state school that isn’t easy to get into. I highly recommend it as a non-audition safety. I recently posted on this forum about the Torggler Summer Vocal Institute which is happening now on campus. Let me know if you have any Qs-- especially about the area.

@SU88BFA Thank you sooo much for all the info, especially about the neighborhood and surrounding areas. That is all so important to hear about. We are on Long Island, a beach 2 minutes from the house and the ocean 15 minutes away, so literally surrounded by water and being near water would make her feel at home.
The Ferguson Center looks incredible and I see that Kelli O’Hara will be performing there. My D has excellent academics so hopefully that would help her chances of getting in to your state system.

Have you seen any of the shows put on by the college?

I did not seethe summer program you mentioned but will search now.

@Joyfulmama- I, too, am from Long Island and grew up 2 blocks from the ocean. I love Virginia. The people here are so nice, and the pace of life is much slower…and that’s a good thing. I like to visit LI, as my family still lives there, but I’d never move back…I like it here too much. Cost of living is better here, too. We are definitely surrounded by water. Newport News is considered to be “on the Peninsula” in our local jargon.

Back to CNU-- Newport News has it’s own airport (USAirways and Delta), and Norfolk (that Southwest flies into, among other airlines) is only 45 minutes away. Several of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor trains start/end here in NNews. (So you could go from Penn Station to NNews without changing trains. Long trip, though) There’s nothing terribly special about Newport News, but CNU is a very good, and up-and-coming university. When my S and I did the college touring trips a few years ago, I couldn’t believe how remote some campuses were…in the middle of nowhere with nothing to walk to. CNU is not like that. Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown area is just 20 minutes away, and Virginia Beach is 45 minutes away, so it’s a good area to visit for a vacation.

I have not seen any of the CNU student shows, but I know others who have, and all reviews have been very positive.

How funny that you are from LI too!! I shared your response with both my husband and daughter and they were both so surprised by your detailed response. I was like,I know that’s why I love this CC forum! But really, your responses have been very helpful. She is now excited to add CNU to our list and to visit.

My son is a freshman this year at CNU and loves it. He was very involved in theater in high school, but is not a theater major. Theater facilities were important to him though and Ferguson Center is top notch for sure. The students are able to get discount tickets for the national acts that appear there. All the facilities are newer with the most recent equipment and technology. CNU compared to private schools we toured - small class sizes, nice facilities, low faculty to student ratio, immaculate grounds, nice dorms, winning sports teams, etc. all at a public cost. CNU is getting more competitive to enter each year.

@vamominvabeach Thats great to hear!!! I keep hearing that this will probably become an audition school soon. We are excited to visit in October!!!
