Other than our main smart TV, we are Firestick all the way. Last year we decided to “upgrade” from an old 1080p Firestick to Chromecast w Google TV, and it was a mess. The provided remote kept malfunctioning, even with new batteries, and the interface made it impossible to switch between user accounts on YouTube TV (a Google product!). We switched to Firestick 4K, smooth sailing ever since.

It looks a lot more expensive though.

It was a Christmas gift from my kids!

With Google TV/Chromecast, you download the apps once and then use the remote. However, if for some reason someone wants to cast from their phone or computer, they can do so just like with a regular Chromecast. To be able to watch Apple TV this way though, I think that only works through Google TV with the remote. I haven’t been able to cast from my phone for Apple TV.

We’ve found that even with a smart TV with built-in fire TV, using the stick works better. I’ve read somewhere that the built-ins are often not the best. We used the Firestick before we had the smart TV also, but couldn’t find a “non-smart” TV.

My husband is the tech guy (works in IT) and we are a Roku family. He occasionally casts from his phone and uses his phone as a remote. I’m lucky to be able to just navigate it all with the Roku remote. It works well. We have all the channels and streaming we need. He likes YouTube TV on our Roku TV. He will take the Roku dongle with us when we travel sometimes like to a beach house so we can use it there too.

Thanks all. Ordered the Chromecast with Google TV.
