CHSPE (California High School Proficiency Exam)

question about college:

i am currently a junior in high school and have around a 3.3 GPA.. i am not taking any honors or AP's either.. so do you guys think it would be best to stay in high school for senior year as well or take my CHPSE (proficiency exam/ged) and get out of high school for senior year and go to SMC (Santa Monica College) instead because my grades are not high enough for better colleges.. if i stay for senior year i will end up going to SMC anyway.. so what is your opinion for it?

Stay for an extra year of growth (and fun) so that you will be better prepared to do your best when you get to SMC.

any other reasons to stay or leave please
i always get that answer… but i just want a more detailed answer please from anyone

If you feel like you are done with high school, take the CHSPE, and move on. You may miss out on certain activities, but you will have a much more flexible schedule at SMC, and you will be one year closer to transferring to a university.

i know its a decision i am supposed to make, but it is really hard for me.
do you guys or anyone else know any big reasons to stay or leave besides activities in high school?
please thanks for all the help so far!

Truth be told, lots of young people are “college ready” well before the end of high school. If you stay in HS you have one more year of clubs, sports, etc. that might not be available at a CCC. You also probably can take AP courses, and for the cost of the AP exam fee, you might be able to earn some college credits. But if none of that appeals to you, it is OK to start college early.

Does your HS offer any tech or career programs that appeal? That could be a reason to stay. In our school district there are programs for EMT/firefighter, hospitality/restaurant management, carpentry, auto mechanics, etc. All of those can lead to good jobs that would help pay for college if not to permanent careers.

~ i’m not in any ap’s or honor’s… never was in any… probably never will be in any
~ i exercise at home because sports take too many hours and i would have less time to study
~ the clubs i am in are also available at community college so i won’t be missing out on anything

~my high school has a couple classes like that for like law, psychology, sports medicine, and maybe a couple others… i am not sure about the rest of them… i don’t think they are very helpful though from the things i am hearing

i appreciate those reasons too thanks again!
i’m really lost.

any more reasons to stay or leave please?

how about… what would you do if you were in my position?

None of us can give you a good answer. You have to decide for yourself.

If you want to be in high school, stay.

If you don’t want to be in high school, leave.

Our local cc has a “high school in college” program, for HS juniors and seniors. Students earn college credits while earning HS diplomas. It’s a wonderful program. I don’t know if Santa Monica’s dual enrollment program is similar, but here’s the link:

[Santa Monica College classes held on your High School Campus.](http://www.smc.edu/EnrollmentDevelopment/HighSchoolPrograms/Pages/Santa-Monica-College-classes-held-on-your-High-School-Campus.aspx)

I think one should stick around at high school unless there is a real compelling reason. What is the hurry? I totally agree with this “Stay for an extra year of growth (and fun) so that you will be better prepared to do your best when you get to SMC.”

College will always be there. High school will not. And high school is FREE…if you go to public school. Try different classes, electives, vocational classes, clubs, leadership, ANYTHING !
