“Churchill Scholars Announced” (news item)

<p>The Winston Churchill Foundation has announced its Scholars for next year's class. This year, fourteen of the most talented college seniors in the nation, each of whom shows “exceptional ability and outstanding achievement” in engineering, mathematics or the sciences, was offered a one year full scholarship for the 2009 - 2010 year to pursue graduate studies at Cambridge University. This year, one Princeton senior was awarded the scholarship. </p>

<p>Top honors go to Harvey Mudd College and Northwestern each of which had two scholars. Princeton was the only Ivy League school to have a scholar and last year led the nation with two. Princeton has produced a great many Churchill Scholars. Along with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it leads the nation in the last decade of these awards.</p>

<p>The University has posted information now about this year’s Churchill Scholar.</p>

<p>"Princeton senior Aaron Potechin has been selected as one of 14 students nationwide to receive a Churchill Scholarship, which funds a year of postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge.</p>

<p>The Winston Churchill Foundation of New York City, established in 1959, offers the scholarships to outstanding American students to pursue graduate studies in engineering, mathematics or the sciences. The recipients study at Churchill College, one of the newer colleges at Cambridge, built in tribute to the noted statesman, orator and strategist. The scholarship pays for a year of tuition, fees and living expenses.</p>

<p>Potechin, who is from Short Hills, N.J., is a mathematics major with a special interest in theoretical mathematics, physics and computer science. He will pursue a certificate of advanced study in pure mathematics at Cambridge. (continued)</p>
