The Winston Churchill Foundation has announced the Churchill Scholars for the 2010-2011 year. This year, fourteen of the most talented college seniors in the nation, each of whom shows “exceptional ability and outstanding achievement” in engineering, mathematics or the sciences, was offered a one year full scholarship to pursue graduate studies at Cambridge University in England.

Princeton and Harvard led the nation and shared top honors this year with two scholars each. Since the earliest class in 1963, Princeton has had 38 Churchill Scholars and leads the nation. Harvard is nearly tied at 37. Within the Ivies this year, Cornell and Yale were also represented with one scholar each.

There are 103 leading universities in the country which participate in the program. All of the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, CalTech and numerous other schools, including most of those with strong science programs are eligible.

This year, Princeton's two scholars are George Boxer '10 (Pure Mathematics) and David Karp '10 (Engineering).

Total Churchill Scholars Since Founding of Program (all schools with 10 or more)

37----Harvard

24----Duke
21----Cornell
20----U. of Illinois, Yale

19----CalTech
17----Michigan State
15----Harvey Mudd

14----UNC Chapel Hill
12----U. of Chicago
11----Brown, JHU, MIT, Purdue, U. of Michigan, U. of Rochester

3----GIT, Naval Academy, Reed, Stony Brook, UT-Austin, Washington
1----Williams, Columbia

Surprised that Columbia has only had a single scholar, given the long and rich history of its engineering school.

Look at Harvey Mudd. I think it is way smaller than everyone else on the list and they’re doing great. Nice school, talented students, sunny California.

Yeah. HMC has about 700 students total (been growing) and about 5000 alums total (only 54 years old) so this is quite an accomplishment. HMC also had 2 Churchill Scholars last year…

How is Cambridge as a grad school for engineering, compared to Stanford, MIT, Caltech?
