Circle in the Square Theatre School

Thanks, connections!

Congratulations!

Congratulations and thank you for all of the in-depth info!

Thanks, lkmccaskill and lovemyfamily.

Now I have a question: how can we go about creating a sub-forum for Circle (a listing under “Musical Theater Schools” at the top of the “Musical Theater Major” forum)?

CircleBroadway, how much is their summer intensive program?

ChasieLooHoo,

According to the CITS website, the 2013 Summer Workshop Program tuition is $3,000; $3,250 for the Summer Musical Workshop Program.

CircleBroadway, could you speak to the selectivity of CITS - both for the summer and the two-year program(s)?

Bumping - could anyone speak to the selectivity of CITS? Both for the summer and two-year program(s)?

I’m a student of Bill Reed, currently a high school sophomore, and I’ve done several workshops with Alan Langdon and other faculty from college programs. (Recently, we did mock college auditions for the head of Emerson’s MT program.) They’ve all been amazing, and everything CircleBroadway said is so accurate. I was pretty sure I wanted a program inside a university and a degree, but reading this has made me reconsider…

^^Are you located in Vermont by chance? My daughter trained for five years with Bill Reed prior to college and also did workshops with Alan Langdon and did monologue coaching with him too, all in Vermont, even though they are on faculty at CITS. You are in great hands!

Yes, I am! I’ve done the summer intensive with Alan, and some workshops during the year. Plus weekly voice lessons with Bill. I’m actually so lucky to live here (which is saying a lot for someone who hates the cold as much as I do)! Did your daughter do any summer pre-college programs? I know Bill sometimes sends people to the CITS summer program.

^^Welcome…nice to see another Vermonter on here!

My daughter did not attend pre-college programs. She went to a theater camp called Stagedoor Manor for 8 summers leading up to going to college. She never went to CITS for the summer but we know others who have done so. My daughter started going to Stagedoor at age 9 and loved it so much and never gave it up until she left for college at age 16. Her path did not cross with your’s at Bill’s because she is now 24.

My daughter, as well as you, are lucky to have trained with Bill and with Alan, here in little 'ole Vermont!

Thanks, it’s good to be here
I haven’t done any summer programs away from home yet, but hopefully something can happen the summer before senior year.
8 summers, wow!

I would also like to know about the selectivity of this program. Anyone have info to confirm or contradict their website, which states about 700 applicants with about 50 admitted to the 2 year MT program.

This is correct. Our year had around 900 applicants and they took 22 actors/22 musical theatre actors. Then after first year they cut around 10-15 students so your graduating class has around 16-18 in each group.

samjay877, what was the basis of the cuts? THat is a high cut rate!

Question about the summer program - my daughter is a Sophomore MT major at CCM, she desires more straight acting training - and are looking at summer programs. Circle in the square offers both a straight acting summer program and an mt program, but it looks like maybe the straight acting curriculum is the same in both programs? Is this true? Would she get just as much straight acting training in the MT program but just get some additional voice and dance work (who doesn’t need that?) Or will the quality or quanity of straight acting training be less in the MT program. If anyone else has advice on straight acting summer training, do let me know!

So I’ve been looking at the Circle web site, and it says that you have to be 18 to do the summer program…but I know people who have (recently!) participated at 17?

I love all the information! Thank you so much. I’m just wondering how it worked in terms of showcases, and getting yourself out there to agents? Do they do a good job in helping you out with this?

I went to NYC in January and CITS was one of the places I auditioned for…I recently found out that I got in!! I am still in shock but so excited! All of the info here is so helpful. It would be cool to get some answers to the unanswered questions above, like about the selectivity and what the basis of the cuts they do at the end of the first year is. Thanks!

I realize that your post is almost three years old but I just wanted to thank you for writing this extensive review of Circle featuring Alan Langdon.

I did the summer intensive in 1987. I know! That’s almost 30 years ago. I loved it and I was thrilled to read your description because it’s almost exactly matched my experience at Circle. Alan Langdon’s scene study was the highlight for me, although Terry Hayden also made a lasting impression. After my experience at Circle I went on to have a fun 12 year career in film and tv and have since moved on to parenting, education and other pursuits but my time at Circle was really memorable, especially from the perspective of loving the deep, personal process. So I really enjoyed being transported back to that time.
