Citibank Vs Earnst & Young

I originally posted this thread under College Admissions, however no one seemed to know much about these two companies.

I am planning to major in Finance, and i will be applying to college this year. I was advised to get an internship over the summer in order to boost my freshman application as well as in order to boost my chances of transfering into a different college if i ever want to. So I worked a little magic and got an offer from Citibank and Ernst and Young. However, I need some guidance. Which one should i choose if i want to major in Finance? If you were in my spot which company would you choose?

I think you mean Ernst & Young.

@sk8rmom

Thanks your reply really helped me make a decision.

What are the job descriptions for each? Where will you be earning money?
They are both good names – so we need a little more information.

If you are currently a senior in HS , a summer internship in the summer prior to freshmen year of college isn’t that significant…The reason is you will likley be accepted or rejected to a school long before the internship.

Both of them are unpaid internship, in Ernst and Young i’ll be done some accountting and Citibank i will probably be making some documents.

have you ever seen the common app? You can list that you are going to be an intern on the common app…

That isnt a lot of info–you didnt share the types of work, the area of focus etc in the internships you have been offered. Based on simply company names, neither is a bad choice. Both obviously well known and well connected and equally recognized. I started my career in banking and then moved to Big Audit Firm consulting. It worked for me. Of course, if the sequence had been reversed (consulting first, industry second) I dont think the outcome would have changed. I definitely professionally “grew up” in my second job (the consulting gig) and then with that under my belt, returned to industry. So who knows?

Big Consulting is always there–it isnt going anywhere, its usually hiring young/bright talent, etc. The opportunity for fit in door isnt a one time thing.

Look hard at Citibank first. Or not.

Don’t be hard on sk8rmom, I was about to say the same thing - make sure you can at least spell the name of the company correctly or you can end up not looking so swift to them later.

I don’t know how relevant interning as a HS student at either company will be. It would depend on what you’d actually do at either company. Citibank is obviously a major financial company. Ernst & Young is one of the largest auditing and professional services consulting firms. Either would be good. Pick the one that’s most convenient and/or that your duties would be most educational - i.e. not just doing mundane copying/shredding or similar duties.

OP they’re right. For undergrad admissions internships aren’t make or break.

Go with Citibank though its a much stronger name in finance than any of the big 4 - your not an accounting major.

Please redirect me to where I posted that internships are “make or break”

Yes,I have seen the common app, have you learned to spell Ernst? …I’d take back my offer if you didn’t know the name of the company…

I’d choose the one that will offer you the most substantive work, but all things being equal, I’d choose Citibank for finance.

OP you were “advised” to do an internship. I was pointing out that whoever “advised” you gave you rather negligible advice.

Secondly your a ******. You’ll never make it in finance with an attitude like that.

Not going to matter. I wouldn’t worry it. Most people will know that you got those internships because of connection and you wouldn’t be doing anything meaningful.

My nephew, a freshman in college, is considering an internship in China with some real estate tycoon, but he would really like to spend the summer at home to be with his family and friends. I told him to spend the last carefree summer at home, and worry about internship sophomore year.

@sean

just because i was advised to intern doesnt mean that my chances of college depend on that internship.

@oldforst

How do you know i wont be doing anything meaningful, can you see into the future? And don’t tell me that an internship wont help with applications because it obviously will. It’s going to look good on both my college applications as well as on my application if i decide to transfer.

OT: Thanks guys, i guess citibank does seem like the best choice.

Tarnation, I hope you’re polite to the folks who helped you get those internships. You’re very lucky. Having said that, I must also say that you haven’t been very polite to the posters here. Three times (#3, #10, and #15) you gave snarky responses. Geez. We’re just trying to help.

BTW, why are you already talking about transferring when you haven’t even started college yet?

OP keep that attitude when your begging to get a real job ill be happy to tear up your resume. As will everyone else you come in contact with.

Finance is a career path where 99% of people get their first job through networking. This requires kissing dozens of asses of people who will **** on you for a minimum of two years. You have a lot to practice.

@sean
Cool story bro type it on your android again please?

@lima

The posters post the most useless stuff. Two of them complained about typo’s while the third one responded with the most stupid post i’ve seen so far. And I am polite but when people start posting just for the sake of posting it makes me mad.

I’m just being prudent, what if i don’t get where i want to be?:frowning: I want to get into my dream school…

Because I won’t even let a college student doing anything meaningful, why would I let a high schooler do anything meaningful? How do you know your internship would help you with your application? Can you see into the future?

I have seen enough “well connected” applicants.

@oldfort

that must mean that internships during your college years are useless as well? Has it ever occured to you that i got thoes internships through hard work and not through simple connections?
