Hey guys, how do you cite a quote from a book in a college application essay? I am already at the word limit caps, so where do I cite my quote and how do I do it? Please give me an example thanks.

Dickens started “A Tale of Two Cities” with, “It was the best of times.”

Homer Simpson’s cry of “D’oh” resonates for me.

If you are quoting more than one sentence, it’s too much them and not enough you.

so I don’t need a work cited thing? Just the quote, book title, and author would be sufficient? It is sort of hard not to use a quote because the prompt asks, “Please tell us what you found meaningful about one of the above mentioned books, publications or cultural events. (1500 char).”

You’re citing the book title, author and quote? That seems completely sufficient to me. What is a "work cited "thing?’

Something like: “Mattoni, R. “Rediscovery of the Palos Verdes endangered blue butterfly, Glaucopsyche lygdamus palosverdesensis Perkins and Emmel (Lycaenidae).” Journal of Research on the Lepidoptera 31 (1995): 180-194. Print.”
Granted, this is not the source I’m using, it’s pulled out from my research journal for science research. Bibliography kind of thing.

No, a full citation is a waste of space. This is a personal essay and not for publication. As long as you are clear that you are quoting, and who, that’s enough.
