After searching through some previous threads, I've seen several people advise others not to discuss location in their "Why do you want to transfer to X University?" essays unless the location specifically relates to some aspect of the curriculum. But to be honest, location really is a big part of why I want to transfer (since the academics at my current school are on par with those of my potential transfer schools)--I wouldn't structure my entire essay around it, of course, but would it really be a mistake to cite my current college's isolated location as a reason for wanting to transfer?

If you choose to go against advice given here then do as you please. You’ve been warned.

Yup!..

The biggest reason I was transferring was cost. I told this to one of the faculty there and he commented that he was glad that Vanderbilt’s new aid program was allowing more students to afford an education there and apply and whatnot. I didn’t mention cost at all in my essay, though. Surely there’s other reasons for you wanting to transfer? The essay doesn’t ask for every single reason, in-depth - it’s an essay and don’t take it too literally - I’m not suggesting you should lie, but use some creative freedom to have a well-developed point or two, even if it’s not your “most” important reason like cost or location.

i wouldnt include location as a reason for my transfer… they want to know you have good solid reasons for transferring to them because they ACADEMICALLY have what you need… if i were an adcom and i got ‘i want a school that is isolated because it keeps me from doing other stuff… etc’ id go, ‘well practice some self discipline and lock yourself in your dorm’…

so many ppl on here wanna transfer to places because of the weather etc… its ridiculous… and the worst part is that they take up spaces in good schools that other ppl would have benefited a lot more from…

Although I agree with most of what has previously been said, I do think that there’s one very valid reason to cite location in a transfer essay: you want to be closer to your family. Although this probably shouldn’t be the main topic of your essay, I highly doubt any ad com is going to scoff at someone who mentions that they wish to be closer to their family.

OP- Doesn’t want to be near family, has no beef with academics, just hates the isolated location of current college.

ok! first off, im gonna apoligize, because i read the ops post wrong and thought he said he wanted to be more isolated but thats not the case, its the opposite, so what i would do is instead of saying your college has negative things, say those positive things about the school youre applying to instead!

‘univ. x gives me the opportunity to blablabla… more opportunities etc etc…’

yea… well i mean… i agree that the family thing is more ok than other things, but yea like you said, it should be a small thing, not a main reason :)
