Citizens Bank at CMU

I was looking at banking services provided at CMU (<a href="http://hr.web.cmu.edu/current/work-life/social/#banking%5B/url%5D">http://hr.web.cmu.edu/current/work-life/social/#banking</a>) and noticed that Citizens Bank offers "enhanced services" at no extra cost. To sign up for the Citizens Bank offers, I simply have to request being a part of the Citizens Bank at Work program. Am I allowed to enroll in this program from a Citizens Bank at home or do I have to sign up at a specific Citizens Bank location? The link on the Human Resources wasn't working when I tried to find out more information! Anyone have any experiences with this? Any recommendations? Thanks!!

That is for employees. You could sign up once you get a job at CMU, but they have freee accounts anyway; I don't know what the "enhanced services" are.

which is better: citizens or pnc or any otherbank?

Most people I know use PNC bank. There is a PNC bank ATM in morewood gardens, or the underground more specifically, but both banks have atms in the UC. There are some PNC bank branches pretty close to campus, but I don't know where the Citizens bank branches are

I am sorry but what is a pnc bank? What is/are good ways to manage money when I come to college (I am a freshmen) ? What ae the banking systems/schemes going on in/around CMU?

PNC bank and Citizen's bank are the two banks in Pittsburgh that have on campus ATMs, which makes them the best choice for a bank account if you don't already have one established in the area. On the first day of orientation, you will be able to set up an account and make an initial deposit into the account (must be at least $25 or something). Supposedly PNC bank accounts can now be linked to our student ID cards (not sure that's a good idea...) so you may prefer PNC bank for that reason. There is now a small PNC branch in the basement of the UC and a new ATM in the lobby of Wean hall.

In the US, ATMs usually charge $2 fees if they are not affiliated with your bank. I opened a PNC account so that I could access cash without a fee (I have another account, but they have no locations in Pittsburgh). Leaving a bunch of cash in your dorm room is probably a bad idea in case the door is accidentally left open and stuff disappears.

I don't know what your at-home banking situation is, but I would definitely recommend opening an account with PNC or Citizen's. To make the initial deposit, you (or your parents) can write a check. How much you need depends on whether you're responsible for your books/meals out/clothes/random stuff and if you plan on working.

Is there a Bank of American ATM on campus?

PNC and Citizens both have a large presence in Pittsburgh. Since both are convenient there wont be much difference.

For us the crucial thing was this: can I (dad, or mom) get to the at-home branch quickly.

We opened a joint account of course. But many times he'd call to alert me that the balance is getting low, or he needs a chunk of money right away. Since I have a PNC branch steps from my office I was able to make cash deposit which was usable by him immediately.

This happened MANY times. Better than paying $35 per transaction while you're overdrawn.

Oh yeah, see if you can get overdraft protection too.

No bank of america, just PNC and Citizen's. Check the Bank of America website to see if there are any ATMs in Pittsburgh.

You're lucky that PNC was convenient both at home and school- I don't think there are any banks like that for me.

PNC is more ubiquitous on campus. There are at least 3 ATMs on campus, plus a mini-branch. There are actual PNC branches at Fifth and Craig (a 10-minute walk from campus) and another one at Forbes and Murray (in Squirrel Hill).

Citizen's Bank actually has a branch on Forbes, before Craig (just past the bridge over the railway). There is at least one Citizen's ATM on campus. There's another Citizen's branch up in Squirrel Hill, at Murray and Darlington.

I arbitrarily chose PNC when I came to town; I've got no complaints about them.
