Civil and mechanical engineering double major

Hi everyone, I'm a "rising" freshman at rpi and I initially planned on majoring in chemE. After AP chem, I have realized that I may not like chemistry as much as I had previously thought. I wanted to get an idea of how much course overlap there is between civil and mechanical engineering, the reason being I may be interested in doing a double major. I know it's a little early to be thinking that far ahead, but I just would like to have all of my options in front of me so I can have time to think about them. Thank you!

There is usually not a great deal of overlap after the first two years. If you are interested in structural engineering, Civil is more specific to that area but Mechanical is more general and with that degree, you can go into a number of different fields.

Don’t worry about choosing at this instant. Take the first year of courses, and learn more about the different majors before choosing.

Mechanical overlaps a lot with aeronautical engineering. Civil engineering is more like architectural engineering. Honestly, a double major in those two doesn’t make too much sense to me. Just find which one you like and focus on it.
