Civil Engineering Internship in the San Francisco Bay Area?

I'm trying to find my first civil engr internship in the Bay Area, but I haven't any success so far. I've applied to places posted by my engineering school or by my school's career center. I've had a few interviews so far, but no success so far. I'm not really sure where else to look because I just depended on my school for internship postings. Anybody know where I can start looking? I've searched online, but I'm not sure which websites are legitimate. I'm preferrably trying to find one in San Francisco. Should I just start emailing or phoning companies?

I would also be interested in hearing about engineering internships in general (Not just civil).

It’s kind of late to start looking for internships now, but best of luck to you.

Here in NYC, there’s an annual directory by a trade magazine (New York Construction), published by McGraw Hill, that lists all design firms and contractors in the local area. There’s a California Construction magazine, published by the same company, so I assume they have a similar publication. I’m not sure who would archive it though. The website is california.construction.com.

Also try the ASCE chapter at your school.

I don’t think it’s too late, my school still sends me internships postings, so I’m guessing there still must be some places that have offers. Anyway, thanks for the help

Formal internship programs are usually from early June to early August. Some companies will hire interns on an as needed basis, but they won’t hire someone for only 4 or 5 weeks. Is your school on a trimester schedule? Your fall semester doesn’t begin in late August?

If you can work during the school year, that’ll definitely help you out.

If you got interviews it means they liked you enough to get to want to know you a little better. Was there anything that it seemed like they were interested in that you could play up in your next interview?

To “Thanol” I think I got really lucky with the interviews I got. For instance, one of the places that offered me an interview had a Professional Engineer who happended to be an alumni from my school. This might be a stretch, but I got an interview for an internship at the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) possibly because I would offer diversity or other “different” qualities to the company (I’m Hispanic btw). Anyway, I suppose the classes I have taken in college simply fit the position I was applying for. For that same BART interview, they possibly wanted to interview me because I took Earthquake Engineering, and they did happen to ask a question on that.

I appreciate the advice, but my outlook on this summer is very bleak. Oh well, I’ll just try harder next year and try to attain a regular job for the rest of this summer. I think my main issue would be toning up my interviewing skills; that is definetely something I should work on.
