So I have taken a class on Transportation Engineering at my school, but I felt it had more of an emphasis on Traffic Engineering than other fields of Transportation Engineering. I have narrowed down my interests in civil engineering to two fields: structural engineering or transportation engineering in an area like public transporation. I obviously have taken several classes related to structural engineering, but I am still not entirely sure what civil engineers do in public transportation. To be more specific, I would love to work for Rapid Transit systems or even work in high speed rail systems. Anybody know any resources where I can learn more about civil engineers in public transportation?

Here are a few.

ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) has a transportation division:

APTA (American Public Transportation Association) is the trade group for transit officials:

ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) is the professional society that covers both traffic engineering and public transportation.
