I am thinking of changing my general civil engineering major to construction engineering technology. The courses seem to be a little more "up my alley". Does anyone know if the wages are better or worse? Any advice? I can not seem to find any statistics that differentiate the two.

Typically, an engineering major is considered to be more challenging than an engineering technology major.

Wages will really depend on your job and I’m not sure what construction engineering technology majors usually go into. If your goal is to go into construction management, the wage difference will probably be minimal as they typically look for a construction-related degree and not any one in particular.

What is your goal? What do you hope to do after college?

How different are the two curricula?

I guess the problem is I really do not know what I want. I went to college after high school but had no direction. I ended up doing special inspection and compaction. I really loved it. Now that work is slow (and I am getting older and the work is physically demanding) I decided to go back to school and do more brain work less physical work. I figured civil because I like construction. When I found out about construction engineering and the classes involved, it is so much closer to what i already do and know. It seems that there is a little less math and science. There is more of a focus on concrete, rebar, soils etc. But if I am not marketable when I am done then I have wasted my time. Should i go for civil engineering anyway? I think I want to work for a city doing building inspection and perhaps end up as a building official.

If you want to do controlled inspections, you’ll be better off with a civil engineering degree instead of construction engineering technology. You will need less experience to qualify for the PE exam and it will provide you with more options. Salaries will be better too.

Thank so much! Very helpful!

I have friends with civil and construction type degrees. The civils are all employed and make good money, the construction guys have just of good of jobs and maybe more money in the management area, but not all of them are employed. In fact, the construction guys got kinda lucky to get the jobs they have.

amber, a construction engineering technology will not really qualify you for engineering positions. In my opinion, the civil degree would give you better opportunities to get into building inspection. Technology degrees are more applied and usually qualify people for roles as technicians, or in this case possibly construction management. Although, I would think that there are construction managers with civil engineering degrees. I would say that in general the true engineering degree will carry more weight and might be more versitile.

Yes there are. I am actually one of those civil engineering majors now working as a construction manager.
