Civil Prep

A few days ago my MALO called me and asked me if I would accept Civil Prep for a year before attending USMA. I said that I would for sure, and he informed me that he believed there was a 99.99% chance I will get to go Civil Prep (provided I pass medical etc). Although I still might get straight in, Civil Prep is looking pretty good. So does anyone have any advice on this?? I've been looking at the various Military Academy Prep Schools (not USMAPS) and was wondering if anyone has attended any and what their experiences were?? Any advice or comments on this would help in the decision should I get to go!!

well, If West pointe offers you an AOG scholaship(association of graduates) for a civilian prep school, Marion military institute is one of the options. I am currently attending MMI for the same program(except its for the Air Force Academy). If you go to MMI, you will find lots of other service academy preparation people. The life here is kinda ok, the people are really great for the most part. In my experience, I've met some really really good friends here.

The campus is small, and the dorms seem even smaller. The school is based on an Army battalion and its easy to get a hang of(even for myself, being an air force guy). The only problem here is that the barracks and building are run down quite a bit.

The school year starts here in august, and it start with a 4 week cycle. Although it isnt anywhere as long as the service academies, theres a bit of activity in which the academies would definately consider hazing. Nothing too bad.

Theres pt 4 days a week at 0530 in the morning and then pt time in the afternoon. All service academy prep people usually have about 18-22 credit hours, so you need to learn to balance your time. After the cycle, things get a little more relaxed. The good thing wiht the credits is that all of them transfer to a regular college, so if you dont get in the academy the next year, you didnt waste your time.

But if you go to Marion Military institute you and you dont completely mess up, youve got a slot.

im here at marion for army...its not too bad, nothing that hasnt already been said, we have a kid in our company who has been to both nmmi and mmi who says mmi is a much better deal

from what i understand most of the AOG's go to either nmmi or here, but good luck either way

I've posted this here several times before, but civil prep is a great program. I wont do my whole song and dance again, but going to NMMI was the best thing I could have ever done and I give it all the credit for why I graduated. That being said, NMMI is the worst place on the face of this planet and I would not go back there for anything on the face of this planet.

I am a current Army Prep at NMMI. It has been an interesting experience so far. Feel free to ask any questions you have about NMMI.

Some people think that a MALO's question about whether you would consider a Civil Prep is a "test" to see how much you want to attend West Point. I don't know if it is, or if its not. It is, however, a great opportunity for someone that is commited to going to West Point to get into West Point.

The two Civil Prep schools that seem to have the most West Point AOG candidates are: Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama and New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. Both schools are military junior colleges with a high school component, although Marion is phasing out its high school program. Make no mistake: neither school is West Point, they are only a means to getting to West Point.

My son is at Marion and hopefully will be a member of the West Point Class of 2011. He would tell you that the physical plant at Marion is a little tired (some of the buildings are pre Civil War) and does not have all of the modern facilities that you would find at West Point or a regular civilian college. It just joined the Alabama college system and has started upgrading its physical plant, but it is not there yet. My son would also tell you that the faculty is outstanding and the other kids in the SAP (Service Academy Prep) Program are great. The faculty is very "hands on" and understand why the SAP kids are at Marion and treat the SAP kids accordingly. A couple of days ago my son told me that the biggest disappointment he had about Marion was that he probably wouldn't see his Air Force Academy and Coast Guard Academy friends after the year was over. He also said that the Marion kids that are at West Point seem to stay in touch with some of the faculty at Marion.

Bottom line: if you truly want to go to West Point grab an AOG Scholarship if one is offered to you. If you accept an AOG Scholarship, you won't go wrong with Marion.

First, I wish for the class of 2009 I had seen more on civil prep, when it was offered to my S I turned my nose up at it. With that S was offered civil prep in June, went to NMMi, is now a PLebe, and doign very well.

Civil Prep was the best thing that happened for him. He went to NMMI, others int he program can answer directly, but you are very well prepared and I think he had a reasonably good time, though ready to go by march or so... He didnt seem to think it was as bad suggested above, but maybe he didnt tell me the worse --ROswell isnt much I agree and I grew up in TX not far from there.

ALso well prepped for USMA, he validated out of classes based largely on NMMI grades. The NMMI cadets had a 'reunion' at the ARMY-NAVY game, and one of his company leaders at USMA did NMMI, apparently they compare stories. IT is a good bond. I would recommend NMMI, but I hear good things about MARion as well. I woudl say choose on geography.
