Civilian Clothes at the Academy

I was just wondering how often you get to wear civilian clothes at the academy? And do naval academy clothes (like shirts that you can buy from navygear.com or the Mid Store) count as civilian clothes or can you wear them around Bancroft?

You can't wear civvies on the yard until junior year. Period. There are restrictions placed on this rule, since clothes are technically supposed to look relatively nice (not your normal street clothes) and you can only wear them when departing on or returning from liberty or leave. After freshman year you can wear Navy/USMC-related clothes (like you mentioned above) in the Hall after working hours. 2/C year can't come quickly enough...

The following applies with regard to civilian clothes/spirit gear:

1) Plebes cannot wear civilian clothes unless on leave status. This includes the travel to/from USNA (within 22 miles).

2) Youngsters cannot wear civilian clothing unless on weekend liberty AND 22 miles away from the Academy. Youngsters cannot leave/return in civilian clothing from USNA on leave.

3) 1/C and 2/C can wear civilian clothing on liberty (weekends only, though they do not have to take weekend liberty) AND to/from USNA on leave or liberty.

4) 1/C, 2/C, and 3/C can wear USN/USMC "spirit gear" after close-of-business (approx. 1600). This means that you can wear USN/USMC apparel. 4/C may eventually get this privilege (sometimes after spring break or closer to Herndon, and the decision to allow 4/C to wear USN/USMC gear lies on the company, so it will vary).

Plebes can wear civvies to and from leave. Almost everyone I know flew home in civvies, I don't know why because usually you get upgraded to first class when you're in uniform... But there is no rule on when you wear civvies on leave as a plebe.

Well, technically plebes have to wear a uniform to their first destination and from their last location before returning to USNA (i.e. leaving from and returning to USNA proper). Lots of plebes change at their sponsors' house or at the airport to travel more comfortably. Some plebes don't have civilian clothes in the Annapolis area at all so travel in uniform home for obvious practical reasons...

Nope. MidRegs says:
c. Third and fourth-class Midshipmen shall not wear civilian clothes on
the USNA complex during leave periods.
As soon as you walk out that gate you can change.

b. Third and fourth class midshipmen are authorized to wear civilian
clothes only when on approved overnight weekend liberty when greater
than 22 miles away from the Naval Academy or when on leave away from
the Naval Academy. This DOES NOT authorize the ownership of civilian
clothes in Bancroft Hall.

Yes, your first destination being outside the gate of USNA. You're just agreeing with what I'm saying dude.

During plebe year do you still have to wear the day's uniform late at night when you are doing homework in the dorms? What do you wear during this time?

As a plebe what are you going to change into outside the gate since you can not have civies in the hall? Furthermore, as a plebe you are not even supposed to have or wear civies at your sponsors house.

Technically speaking BWI is still in the 22 mile radius so changing at BWI is still breaking regs. As a Plebe and Youngster we are supposed to travel in the Uniform of the day. Besides it gets you some good perks - I have had dinner purchased for me and at Xmas got a sweet upgrade.

at night during study hour you can change into PT uniforms for comfort

what about clothes you where at sport practices?

You're not even allowed to have civvies at your sponsor's house?

Are Plebes allowed to wear civilian clothes?

No. Plebes are to be in the uniform of the day at all times during town liberty. Plebes may relax this requirement within a Sponsor’s home, but only issued USNA uniform articles may be worn. Plebes may not store civilian clothes at their Sponsor’s home.

Granted many Mids and sponsors will turn a blind eye to this reg, but it is the "official" reg.
