As of earlier this spring my boyfriend became unemployed so my income has been supporting the both of us. I'm paying all the bills, food, etc. So when I filled out the FAFSA I said he was my dependent. The school wants documentation that I will be supporting him now through june of 2010. They wont tell me what documentation to provide. Anyone have any ideas?

I don’t believe you can use your boyfriend as a dependent on the FAFSA.

A dependent is anyone you live with and provide more than half their support. I have seen students I work with list bf/gf if they are living together. How the school wants you to prove this is probably a question you need to ask them.

I am a financial aid officer, and we do NOT allow students to claim their boyfriend/girlfriend unless it’s a very unusual situation. We will eliminate them from the household size … and that REALLY kicks up the EFC for most independent students.

Your school is asking you for documentation. YOU need to give them whatever info you have that proves that you are supporting him. If you are supporting him, then just show them that. Sorry … no help from me … if you do truly support him, you’ll figure out on your own what you need to submit.
