Clara Dickson Hall triple rooms...What do you know? Will my son be happy?

My son just found out his residence hall assignment for this fall 2013. He was placed in Clara Dickson in room 2519, which is a triple. This does not feel like an ideal situation, but he/I am trying to maintain a positive attitude and look at all situations as having positives and negatives. It just seems like too little space for 3 people to share, and that it will be easy to get on each others nerves. Also, a great majority of the building houses students in single rooms which means that the students in the triples are 'odd'. Can anyone offer any insights from your own experiences or from your friends'?

Honestly, your son will be fine. My friends and I usually joke but housing and small room space is usually part of the Cornell experience. I had a couple of friends who had forced doubles and dealt with the issue accordingly. Many of them became good friends at the end of the term. For me, I discussed the ground rules with my roommate during orientation to prevent any misunderstanding/issues that may arise later. I also try to deal with issues that arise immediately. If your son stick with these rules, he should be fine.

It will take time for your son to get used to sharing a room especially if he is used to having his own room, but I am positive your son will do fine and will probably become great friends with his rommates. At the end of the day, have a positive attitude especially since tons of other Cornellians are facing the same problem.

All the rooms are small. (In some of the singles in other dorms, you just about fall into the bed after you open the door. Dickson has somewhat larger singles compared to others.)
One important thing to keep in mind, if he really does not like the living situation(after he tries it), he should get on the list to change rooms. It won’t happen immediately, but things move around, and spots open up after some weeks (or even after one semester).

As to being “odd” because Dickson is mostly singles, I doubt this will be the case.

I lived on the 5th floor and honestly, the triples were the place to be in terms of hanging out. At least on my floor, the triples were really large and ideal for socializing, especially if the people in the room are friendly (which I’m sure they will be, considering everyone wants to make friends freshman year).
