Claremont colleges: "underrated"?

“…And Bill Gates thinks well enough of Mudd to drop in for a visit.”

Bill Gates has know about the Claremont colleges for quite a while. His sister graduated from Pomona.

I can’t answer your question, but I can say this. When DS was choosing where to go, he visited schools in other parts of the country. When he mentioned Pomona there, both parents and faculty knew about the school. It seems to me that it has a bigger reputation in other parts of the country than it does here (CA), partly because it doesn’t get confused with Cal Poly Pomona elsewhere.

actually, if you tell most of us Southern Californians that your daughter is going to Scripps, we will say “oh, the one in La Jolla?”

I had a friend who was thinking of turning down Regent’s Scholarship / Chancellor’s Scholarship at UCB to go to Pomona College, but then he went to Harvard after receiving a Harvard offer of admission.

"“oh, the one in La Jolla?”

That is the one I talked about in Post 40. :)

In terms of job recruitments, do employers recruit at LACs?

I’m from San Diego; I’m enjoying this thread. :-)
For perspective, I’d never really heard of Penn before last year and definitely didn’t know it was an Ivy school. My son was still calling it Penn State until last fall. Needless to say, after visiting Penn and Princeton, we see why they are Ivies; both schools are just lovely!

Hi. This is a very helpful thread. We are from Chicago, and my son is torn between U-Chicago and CMC. Like many of you, midwesterners are generally unfamiliar with CMC and the Claremont schools. (Note: they are also unfamiliar with Carleton.) My son wants to study economics and political science with a focus on the Middle East. He’s also quite interested in CMC’s PPE program. He plans to go to graduate school and eventually work for the State Dept. or within a think tank. We understand that CMC has a preprofessional focus, but he loves the school and they’ve offered him a full scholarship. U-Chicago is very expensive but has enormous depth, a world-renown economics department and “the core curriculum.” Any thoughts?

CMC for undergrad, Chicago for graduate school. CMC is a top school with a top program, and luckily for your son, tuition won’t cost him or you money.
