Claremont McKenna Fall 2021 Transfers

Hey I have another question! I saw on the website for transfers that during registration, the registrar automatically enrolls transfers in a number of classes. It says that transfers are free to modify their given schedule. Did you experience this/were you assigned a schedule by the registrar and did you have any trouble changing your schedule if you needed to? I am nervous that I will want to make changes to my schedule but I may not be able to because classes will be full. Thank you!

Yes, the registrar picks your classes and schedule for you during your first semester. This happens for all transfers. Pretty much all of the transfers in my transfer cohort changed their schedule in some way. Many transfers don’t like the professors that they are put into and want ones with better ratings, or they just flat out are not interested in a course that the registrar gave them. For me, I swapped out two courses. I even switched one course twice (I hopped into a new course, then hopped out of that one into a different one). I did not have trouble changing my courses my first semester at CMC, since I was in a very small major, but I do generally experience difficulty changing courses at CMC.

I will caution that you may not be able to get into the courses that you want. All seniors, juniors, and sophomores have already registered in the spring so a lot of courses are full/closed off. Because they give you your schedule during the summer, I would encourage you (should you come to CMC) to email professors and PERM into the classes you want ASAP. The freshman don’t register until the fall when they come to CMC, so you will have the edge of getting to courses before them.

The Claremont Colleges employ this registration system called PERMing into a class where you basically send in a request to join the class on the portal and then send the professor a separate email where you beg them to let you in. This system can be very frustrating at times because it is entirely up to the professor’s discretion as to whether or not they accept any PERMs or whether your PERM is accepted. For example, you could be the first person to send in a PERM for a class, but they have the option to accept PERM #50 over the other 49 PERMs ahead of this person. They also have the option not to accept any PERMs. So, a class could have 5 spots open but the professor may choose not to fill those spots and effectively cap their class. I have experienced mixed success PERMing into courses. I would say I have like a 40% success rate with PERMs, meaning I am rejected from classes more often than I am accepted.

That is great advice. Thank you for this info!
