Clark Scholars 2012

mathnerd1 ur just bad lol

I just got a call from Dr. San Francisco and was offered a spot in the program!! For those of you trying to analyze the acceptance/rejection pattern (I personally have been stalking cc recently trying to figure out what’s happening), here’s my info. This is the first time I have heard from the program since applying - no top 36 call or email. Dr. San Francisco just called my house and offered me a spot in his lab. I put down biology and environmental science as my research areas - specifically microbiology and bioremediation. Dr. San Francisco is working on creating a water purifying device with an engineering professor, so I’ll be working on him with that project.

For those of you who have been rejected or have yet to hear, take this with a grain of salt. They are obviously picking participants who have interests that directly align with research being done at Texas Tech - you all have incredibly strong qualifications but they just didn’t have the right opportunity for you. I applied to five research programs; I was rejected from RSI, Jackson Lab, MDIBL and still haven’t heard back from a more local program. All of these programs are so competitive that honestly, luck more than anything determines admissions. My best advice is start talking to professors near where you live - I was so sure I would be rejected from my last two programs that I already starting emailing local professors to try to find research opportunities on my own. I’ve been doing research at a local university for the past year, and it all started out of a random email to a professor I had never met or talked to. You will all find incredible opportunities this summer…if you have any questions about my stats or need suggestions about anything let me know!

Also, to anyone else who gets in: can’t wait to meet you this summer!!

CONGRATS TO BOTH OF YOU!!! Two so far from CC, so that’s always good  What area did you get accepted into mathnerd?

Still nothing here… Hoping for some word soon, either way!

Anyone else still waiting?

Rejection! My topic was Quantum Computation; last name Z on the East Coast. In retrospect, maybe I should’ve just said I was interested in physics in general…

are you telling me that the 5% who get accepted were the ones who directly aligned with TTU research … ?
how’s that considered prestigious ? ROFL

I don’t think that’s what it is. Yes, of course, if your interests line up with a professor at Texas Tech then it’ll be that much easier to get a mentor. But just because your interests line up doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be accepted.

“are you telling me that the 5% who get accepted were the ones who directly aligned with TTU research … ?

I put down algebra and combinatorics and got topology…

Rejected :C

But anyways, congrats to the two who got in!

The general area I applied for was applied mathematics, with a focus on numerical models.

Good luck to anyone who’s still waiting!

“I put down algebra and combinatorics and got topology…”

i’m doing research on topology right now (:

Cool truehype!

I got a call from the administrator 2 days ago, and got the confirmation email today! I am so excited. I applied for Mechanical/electrical engineer and my mentor’s in Industrial Engineering.

We should start a Facebook group or something for everyone whose going this year!

Hey Sheam13, I got the same call too, except he told me I was in the top 12 and they wanted me in the program. I’m going to be working on organic solar cells, and carbon nanotube research. I have never heard of these before, so I am very excited about learning more soon!

Also, I found your advice was spot on. I had gotten rejected so many times, and my advice is that just keep trying. Although applying can get tedious and disappointing, if you get it, it is the best feeling in the world. I hope that helps. Also I look forward to meeting you soon, Sheam13!

Congratulations ritz! I still haven’t heard anything… Is anyone else in this same boat with me?

I got a call from Dr. San Francisco yesterday and received the confirmation email this morning. I am absolutely thrilled, and I cannot wait to meeting you all, mathnerd1, Sheam13 and ritz95!

Hi everyone! I got my confirmation email today as well! I’m incredibly excited!

Congratulations, what fields?Still waiting… This sucks, is anybody else waiting?

I’m working with classical languages and history, which is interesting as I think thats one of the few thats not math or science related.

My field is chemical engineering. cinna, I can’t wait to meet you. :)

@BostonBoy: If I had to take a guess, I’d say that either they’re trying to find a mentor for you or you’re on some form of a waitlist…?

I just created a Clark Scholars 2012 group on Facebook. Joinnnnnnn.

Any news regarding Clark Scholar Program result? I got neither email nor phone call… Am I the only one waiting now?
