Clark Scholars 2013?

REEEEEJECTED but that’s ok~
Sigh I just wish this had been more timely. That’s all.

Are you guys all getting these emails at the same time?

HSHSP was sending acceptances and rejections in batches, too.

Rejected about 2 days ago, I applied very early, and I got my confirmation email for my application way back in February. I am from Texas.

Congrats to those who got in! I am not too disappointed, as I wasn’t expecting to really get in…for starters, my 200 PSAT didn’t do me any favors at all…

Argh… Still no rejection emails or acceptance phone calls. This is killing me .

I was looking at last year posts, and there is about a 2 week difference between the first rejection and the first acceptance. Hope that helps

Got my rejection a few days ago. Last name D, from Texas. Apparently 2400/800 Bio and some state/intl level extracurricular’s didn’t cut it…must have been the essays.

I’ll be going to Welch Scholar’s however…if anyone wants any information on that program in the future, I’d be happy to help.

@SwagDaddy: Not much discussion in CC about Welch which is surprising. Which Welch program are you going to ?

UT Austin.

Are they done with the rejections or what? It seems like people have stopped getting them.

Nope, they’re definitely still going to be coming. The people who have posted aren’t the only ones receiving rejection letters, that’s for sure.
<soapbox> Also, one thing that REALLY bugs me is when people say things like “Oh, well I guess my amazing stats weren’t enough to for [insert program here].” It doesn’t garner any pity from anyone, and there’s no point in saying it. One thing that should be understood is that achievements are not going to be what gets you into the research program, internship, or college of your choice. While selection committees will certainly look well upon your scores and awards, they aren’t going to be what sets you apart from the rest of the applicant pool. So please-- don’t. </soapbox>
I suppose we’re going to be waiting for the rest of the decisions for awhile, though… Campfire songs, anyone?

@hoctopi - I did feel bad for Swagdaddy and I don’t think he/she was looking for anyone’s pity either. Let folks vent. Its OK. Lets be graceful about accepting it. I am sure there are a patient few here on CC who are bugged by our impatient whining about not hearing results yet.

And remember, if you’re not accepted, it really isn’t a reflection of you as a student or individual. When you have such a large number of overqualified students applying for only a dozen spots, it inevitably turns into more of a lottery than a completely fair process. The same goes for admissions into top-tier schools.

^^ Always reminds me of this MIT Admissions blog entry:

[Applying Sideways | MIT Admissions](Applying Sideways | MIT Admissions)

Specifically, this:

"For example:

A few years ago, we did not admit a student who had created a fully-functional nuclear reactor in his garage.

Think about that for a second."

I love that post.

You gotta wonder though, what could that kid have done wrong elsewhere that even a fully functional nuclear reactor didn’t help him?

wow this is insane, may 4th and i have no idea whether i was accepted or not

at this point, i would suggest anyone who doesn’t know to make sure they have a summer job/volunteering lined up. they might only get to the last round of acceptances/rejections in mid-may

also, has anyone received that final 36 phone call?

Hey guys,

As a Clarkie who was in your shoes at this point last year, I hope I can shed a little light on the process.

Acceptances will be coming later this year than normal…there were more applications, plus one of the longtime staff members has retired this year, which I’m sure has made things a bit more difficult.

According to Dr. SF, the first round of cuts have been made. From what I know, the committee tends to take several weeks to narrow down all the applications. This is partly due to the challenge of finding appropriate mentors for applicants, as many professors travel and do research in other places over the summer. That being said, strong applications are NOT denied solely due to a lack of a mentor; we had one Clarkie last year who applied for physics and ended up working on math since the physics professor he would have been paired with was at CERN for the summer. So, don’t overanalyze your program choices too much…your acceptance/rejection will be due to a variety of factors working on combination.

Also, try not to overanalyze cc posts too much either…Clark doesn’t have a set protocol for announcing rejections/acceptances, so searching for a pattern is a waste. Typically, they call people and let them know they have made the top 36 and confirm that they are still interested (many people who have already decided to attend RSI and other programs never withdraw their Clark applications, which makes things difficult). But, last year I never received a top 36 call or email, just a call that I had been accepted.

So, the moral of the story is too just try to relax! You are all incredible students who will end up doing amazing things this summer and in the future, regardless of what happens with Clark. It probably wouldn’t hurt to start looking into other options just because as many people have said, it’s getting pretty late and many research positions and jobs for the summer are being filled now. But, just hang in there for the next couple of weeks, and if you are accepted, get ready for the best summer of your LIFE! :)

If you have any questions about Clark, summer programs, my experience, etc., feel free to message me!

Hoctopi…I understand where you’re coming from…I’m not really even all that annoyed by being rejected because let’s face it, 12 people out of 380? That’s a game of luck really. My main point in putting that in there is to let people know that you can’t bank on anything to get you into these programs so make sure you apply to a few if you don’t want to find out in May that you have nothing lined up for the summer.

One thing I do take issue with is that “achievements aren’t going to be what get you in”. I’ve bled for my achievements and I take offense to a system that doesn’t understand that, just because they supposedly don’t set me apart. They define me because all my qualities have led me to them and in turn, I’ve developed new qualities because of them. And I have achievements that demonstrate some aspects of my personality that set me apart whereas someone else will have achieved in another field that sets them apart. Excuse me for thinking the things I achieved meant I would be well-suited for a research program…maybe I was wrong. But I don’t think we can discount achievements just because they supposedly aren’t what get people in to college/programs.

@Sheam13: Thank you for taking the time. Who was your mentor ? Is The Dept of Surgery away from the Biology department (Dr. SF) ?

@Sheam13, what is the area code of the number Dr. SF called you with, if you actually did get a call? I have a bunch of weird private phone calls that I didn’t pick up, and now I’m starting to worry one might have been important
