Clark Scholars 2013?

In response to TheJJ411, although I have not heard of a theatre arts Clarkie, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible (although I, in my ignorance, don’t know exactly how one would “research” Theatre Arts). Also, I was the one who worked with psychology professors and my experience in the program was not in any way lessened due to the fact that my professor was new to the Clark program.

For my personal narrative, I wrote about synesthesia (quick and dirty explanation-- [Synesthesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Synesthesia - Wikipedia)) and I also used my personal narrative as my Common App long response.

I’m not sure who to ask for a recommendation. Most of my sophomore year teachers I didn’t really get to know well, especially my science teachers as I had two chemistry teachers, each for only about three months. I’m debating asking my history teacher (six months) for a recommendation as well as my French teacher (two years). However, I’m not sure if science/math teachers are preferred. I’d also like to ask my English teacher of this year, but we have also only known each other for three months. Any advice??

Also, I am interested in researching in the psychology field.

The application form is a web page. I am trying to figure out the best way to fill it.

 1. Is it possible to save the page and fill it out section by section over 2-3 days period and then print and submit it via mail? If I store the web page and fill it out and do save again, nothing gets stored.
 2. The essay/narrative, it appears that if you type more lines that visible, the web page accepts it, but when printed, it cuts off the text. Please confirm.
 3. Part C narrative says 1-page. What is a one page? I am assuming whatever that will fit in the big text box.

It does not appear that one can submit online. Is that true?

@kalimata: I copied the essay prompts into a word document so that I could work on it and save it. Haven’t started yet though, haha. The other stuff I am going to just sit down and do, it doesn’t take too long. The cutting off part is correct. The Clark people say max one page because of this - I am guessing they don’t want to read super lengthy essays. One page is, I’m guessing, the size of the box, yes. I think mine will be shorter, however, so you know… no problems for me haha. You have to print it and then send it in - no online submissions, correct.

I’m just going to include sealed teacher recs in my application - would this be okay? Instead of paying for extra postage…

@sardonyx827, I asked my English teacher from last year. My science teachers I sorta had to ask for the ones from last year, since this year mine are online teachers who I have never met, so…

I think that since this program lets their kids do research in non-science/math/engineering fields, any teacher (including French and History) would do. I guess just ask any teacher who likes you and knows you well. My English teacher of this year has not known me that long but likes me. I didn’t ask her, but I could have and I am sure she would have written me a wonderful letter - it is really up to you. What matters is that they can testify to your work ethic and abilities. (: Hope I helped, and I am nervous for applications!!!

Thank you for the help!
Another question, and I think this is a silly one, but for “Reference’s name and Title”, we have to put Mr. [First name] [Last name], correct? :P

@sardonyx827: Yup. Unless they’re a Ph.D or something and have a special title haha

Mentors.

On the Clark Scholars site, under People (People Involved) there are 12 Texas Tech Faculty Mentors listed. Are these Professors the faculty for this year? Are these the lab spots open for this year? If you are interested in a research area that doesn’t have a professor on the list, could you still be accepted? Would you then be linked to a different Texas Tech faculty member ?

@parental unit 3, I think that the professors listed are the main ones, but they can get other professors with you if they really connect with your interests. I’m pretty sure…

The list of mentors applies to the 2012 program. When I applied, they had the 2011 list up. Some of the 2011 mentors were our mentors, but many of them were not. Your acceptance is not dependent on having a compatible mentor. If you are a priority, then they will find you a more suitable professor to work with.

For teacher recommendations, is it better to get a current teacher? I know it’s been at least 4 months into this school year already, but I feel like none of my teachers this year really know me that well. I wanted to ask my chemistry teacher from last year, but she told me to first ask my current science teachers (I’m taking both bio & physics right now) because it’d show that I wasn’t slacking off in senior year. :P

Also, is it better to ask teachers who teach subjects related to whatever topic you want to do research in? (I’d like to do research related to bio/chem; but how about asking, say, a psychology teacher?)

Thanks for your help! :)

archaic: Definetely don’t get your recommendation letter from your past chemistry teacher if she suggested that you first ask your current science teachers. I would steer away from any teachers who show the slightest hesitation about writing you the recommendation for whatever reason they give you. The last person you want writing your letter is someone who is not wanting to do it. My son is in the same dilemma contemplating which teachers to ask right now. I think it’s a difficult judgement call to pick the best two teachers. Best luck to you.

:D Got 2 out of 3 recs! Would it be bad if I sent my applications in like a month early? Maybe I’ll just hold on to it until 2 weeks beforehand…

Are you expected to have a research project idea when you apply/get there? Or are you supposed to work with the mentor to develop one?

@kdengg if you get in and get sorted to a professor, you should at least know what his/her research is about and read their published papers. Perhaps not a specific topic, no. They’ll help you develop one. At least, that’s how it was with my one from this past summer.

Does anyone think choosing business as the research area would be too weird

@kooshbag not really, unless that was your only research area interest you put down… I’m sure it’s not :D

Because on the list if topics on the website it listed it but on the application itself it was left out

^^List it under “other”

Of*
Yeah I was thinking of doing that but I wonder if it would be better to just choose a different topic that’s actually listed there
