Clark Scholars 2013?

Hey, I was just wondering, what were the back up programs you applied to? Some good names would be nice! I’ve been looking for a while and can’t seem to find any good programs.

Thanks!

None of mine really counted as back-ups as they were all quite competitive, but these are the other programs I applied to:

Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program
RSI
Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory High School Research Fellowship Program (typically only for Maine students, but they said they sometimes accept one or two out of state students)
Drexel High School Summer Research Internship (commuter program in Philadelphia which apparently doesn’t exist this year?)

Some other options that I didn’t apply to for various reasons but have heard good things about:
MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science)
SSP (Summer Science Program)
Simons
Garcia
NIH has some research opportunities for high school students, but you need to be able to find housing in D.C.
City of Hope Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy (need to be able to find housing in LA)

For those applying to Clark Scholars this year, what other programs are you applying to?

^RSI, RISE, and HSHSP. I don’t feel like flooding my teachers with requests for rec letters, since my choices of teachers are limited and the teachers are generally pretty bad at being punctual… so if I don’t get into any of these, I’m screwed. Guess I’ll work somewhere over the summer to get some money for college if that happens. No research internships where I live, no research institutions, only technical community colleges… hmm

When you list the school and community activities, do you only have to include the number of hours for the community service activities or should you list the number of hours spent in all of your school activities as well?

Thanks!

what is the address where we’re supposed to send everything to?

is it:

Dr. Michael San Francisco
Texas Tech University
Department of Biological Sciences
Box 43131
Lubbock, TX 79409-3131

OR

Dr. Michael San Francisco
Texas Tech University
Department of Biological Sciences
Flint & Main
Lubbock, TX 79409-3131

i know it says the second one on the website (both are listed there though) but i don’t understand how that is an address lol

a couple more questions:

1) what do they want official copies of? is it just that they want an official transcript and unofficial copies of PSAT/SAT/ACT scores, or do they want official school documents for both?

2) is there any place to include AP scores?

stringpaper, I listed the hours for everything. I think I listed everything as hours/week and weeks/year instead of estimating total times, but I think as long as it is clear which activities you devote the most time to, you should be fine.

kooshbag, if I recall from the summer, the first address is purely for mail and the second address is for anything from FedEX, UPS, etc. So, it depends on how you’re sending the application (although I think it would end up in the right place eventually no matter what). I would defer to Ms. Durham about your other two questions just because she can be very particular about the details and I don’t want to tell you the wrong thing. My guess would be that unofficial score reports would suffice and that you could include your AP score report with the other score reports if there’s no place to put those scores on the application.

For all of these specific application questions, definitely consult Ms. Durham instead of relying entirely on our (usually awesome) advice. I know several people who got emails last year because they didn’t follow the directions exactly, so air on the side of caution!

Don’t know if this questions been answered yet, but in regard to the whether you can ask a previous science mentor, I e-mailed Ms. Durham and this was her response.

Good Morning B------: Your evaluations are completely your choice.

I know I might seem a bit suspicious with my post count but I made this account just because I saw this thread.

Also, I have a question of my own: I already e-mailed for clarification, but I’m still confused. When I try printing out the application, in the preview it gives me 7 pages instead of the 4 that I consider intuitive. There’s basically a huge gap between the part C heading and the instructions of the prompt. Anyone know how to get rid of this?

Thanks, Sheam13!

Also,@blizzdmb, the same thing happened to me because I was using Google Chrome. Once I switched to Firefox, the problem went away and the application looked normal again. Perhaps that is your problem, unless you are already using Firefox…

Does anyone know that if we’re putting down Bilingual Education, if the languages can be asian? I’m interested in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies and have gotten 5s in the APs for those tests. However, I looked on the list of mentors and it seems like the only one available focuses on Spanish. I’m currently taking AP Spanish in school, but I was thinking that I’d need a more solid proof of my achievements before putting down spanish as a choice…

Has anyone done research in Music (or any of the non-science categories) at Clark scholars before? If so, what was it like?
I’m still trying to wrap my mind around how music research is possible…

For the letters of recommendation, can they be returned to us in a signed, sealed envelope or do they HAVE to be mailed by the recommedors to Texas?

Tadakichi, the mentors listed are just the people that the 2012 Clark Scholars worked with and not the full list of possible mentors. I would look at the TTU language facility; if they have more than a couple professors of asian languages, I think there is a fairly good chance that Clark would be able to find you a mentor if accepted.

Stringpaper, I haven’t heard of a music scholar (we didn’t have one last year), but there are typically one to two humanities scholars each year. The experience really depends on the professor you get matched with, but one of the scholars last year who did history/language research enjoyed it.

Collegeluva101, I think I mailed my recommendations in signed, sealed envelopes last year, but the rules may have changed. I would check with Ms. Durham.

Hey, I’m applying for Clarks 2013.

I saw on a previous post that “the average test scores of the 2011 Clark Scholars were: SAT > 2276, PSAT > 223.” The person also said that “At time of applying, I had a 2150 SAT, which I didn’t put down, and a 230 PSAT, which I did put down.”

I have a 2250 SAT and a 237 PSAT. Would you recommend putting down the SAT score? Thanks, and sheam13, guess who I am?

Bread333, I honestly don’t think the SAT score (or any test score for any applicant) will greatly sway your application either way, so I see no harm in putting it down.

And might you be a Welch?! :)

I might be! It’s so great seeing you Clarkies active on this forum. Thanks for the advice!

^^ no kidding. So I just got a look at one of my teacher recs (accidental, I swear) and all my teacher did is list my accomplishments for most of the letter. Granted, it LOOKs like a nice letter and from what I can tell does have things other than that, but… erm. I feel awkward. I absolutely can’t ask her to rewrite it, too rude (and how would I explain accidentally catching a glimpse?) and she is literally one of the only teachers I can ask. How much do you think this will affect my application?

First of all thank you former Clarkies for being so helpful.
I have a few questions and have seen similar concerns posted already so sorry for somewhat repeating them however I feel like I could use all the help I can get.

 1. As far as recommendations go, I’m not asking my AP Bio teacher from last year even though I’m picking biological sciences/biochem as my topics of choice mainly because we never connected well and I was left to self-teach for most of the course. Will it seem bad that I won’t have her recommendation and will instead be asking my PreCal teacher/AcaDec coach from last year, my Physics C/PreAp Physics teacher for 2 years, and my BC teacher/Math Club coach? I have a much better rapport with these 3 teachers and they think highly of me.

2) As far as listing extra-curriculars goes, I know it asks to mention any leadership positions but is it worth listing accomplishments within these activities such as State Championships/International Qualifier etc? Or will that be looked down upon for deviating from the instructions?

3)For bread333. You said you were a Welch scholar last year. I am planning on applying to that program as well but can’t seem to find as much info regarding it. Do you know how selective it is and also whether a focus on biochem would be possible even though it’s a mainly chemistry based program?

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this help. As an Asian that seems to fall so ridiculously into every Asian applicant stereotype, I could really use some research experience to help my application. Primarily however, I would like to conduct the research to see if it’s my cup of tea for the future and to see if something I discover could end up helping someone out somewhere down the road.

WeIsCool, that honestly doesn’t sound like a bad rec, and regardless, one rec won’t make or break your application. I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

SwagDaddy, I think your three recs sound perfect: teachers that know you well both in and out of the classroom. I don’t think it will reflect poorly on you at all that you don’t have you AP Bio teacher writing a rec. Also, I’m fairly positive I listed a few accomplishments last year (max one or two per activity); as long as you only focus on the particularly significant ones, you definitely shouldn’t be looked down upon. Best of luck!
