Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY

What do you all think of Clarkson? I am thinking of going there because they are a good school where I know I will get a great education but I was wondering how campus life is. Are there things to do? Are the dorms good? How are the girls? etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

By the way I am majoring in mechanical engineering.

My general impression is that Clarkson is one of the best second-tier engineering colleges in New York State. I think they do an excellent job with the students who enroll there.

I know they are good in terms of their education and cirriculum but how is the social life?

I think the social life is good at Clarkson, maybe too good. The few I have spoken with seem to have fun at Clarkson. It is a "well-rounded" lifestyle, I think. The town Potsdam is a small college town. Also home to SUNY Potsdam.

I heard there is a shortage of girls there, is that a problem? or do you think there will be enough other girls at suny

Clarkson is 76% male. And, I honestly have no idea how much Clarkson students socialize with SUNY students. Based on probablities, I'd say Clarkson is a long, dry trip through the desert. This may be true of engineering at colleges with an even gender ratio, also. Cornell engineers might as well be castaways on a deserted island. There are a lot of nice women at Cornell but not many in Engineering. And, engineers have little time for social life, unfortunately.

great ice rink....suspect much of the social scene centers around hockey games & Canadian beer.

Potsdam is a small town, but it's nice and you can find things to do. Just hanging out with friends is a fun thing to do. I'm up here, but I go to SUNY Potsdam.

Btw, the gender split at Clarkson isn't as profound as it used to be. They're getting closer in numbers. And anyway, in that case.. Clarkson has more guys, but SUNY Potsdam has more girls. shrug
