What do you do when your child finally decides on school A and then school B offers a significant ( 50% tuition) scholarship? As far as the schools go both have comparable music programs and excellent academics and up until this point the same cost. My daughter is very upset because she knows she should reconsider her choice because of the money but for valid reasons really had her heart set on school A, which pretty much only offers need based aid… I hate this process of not being up front from the beginning with financial packages. After all, we as the applicants are required to disclose everything to these schools about our financial situation from the beginning. There has to e a better way to do this.
I’m sorry. The bright side of this is they really must want your daughter. I’d reconsider for financial reasons and make sure she really wants School A. I believe if a certain school did the same thing to my son, it would be just as difficult.
It’s too bad when good news ends up feeling like bad news. A similar thing happened to my S (not a music major) this year. One of his safeties unexpectedly offered him a full ride–but he really wanted to go to his top choice. The awards at peer institutions of his top choice came in $6-8K higher than top choice. After lots of soul-searching, I sent the competitive offers in to first choice and appealed the award. We ended up with an award about $5k better. Maybe you can use the new award to bargain? I feel for you–it’s not easy to weigh money against your kid’s desires. And who isn’t weighting money these days, with costs as they are?
I don’t want to sound like she is not appreciative of the offer from school B but it wasn’t in the picture when she was weighing all her options. Both schools came out the same financially, so other reasons went into choosing school A. Her decision process might have been different if she had been able to include that factor. And I don’t think school A will offer anything to counter.

I can understand how frustrating it must be, with your D having diligently gone through the process and selected a school. But 50%? Holy moly. I would approach school A. You literally have nothing to lose.
She is visiting school A as I am writing this to have some lessons so she can choose a studio. My husband went with a copy of the offer from school B and will try his best but I have slim hopes. Maybe if she hits it off with a teacher they may have some influence on the financial side. Why does this feel like I am haggling over a used car? Not liking this part.
I agree. It is awkward and a little humiliating to beg for money especially when you are not used to doing it because you have a decent income. It is odd to me to say we can’t afford x school because we can afford most things except gigantic tuition bills. It is very humbling.
One does have to put oneself in a different frame of mind. It helped me that the first of my 2 appeals was an online form for academic merit. I was able to write out my statement and paste it in. That gave me courage for the actual verbal ask in round 2 and helped me to crystalize my talking points.
Oww I love haggling for money! I find it exhilarating. Many different ways to look at it!!!
