I am still waiting on UCLA, so you are definitely not alone!
It’s still up in the air for my son
Sending peaceful decision making and clarity vibes your way, @cellomom6 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi all. My D has made her choice but I am not ready to make it official yet. Is there any benefit in committing before May 1 or is it safe to wait and see if the financial package gets any better (chances are it probably won’t ).
That’s what I wonder too.
Hornet is correct. Most parents and students don’t understand that the common practice is to over-admit by a certain percentage, which may vary by instrument, and also (with yield in mind) to offer more scholarship than is really available. They do this with an expectation, backed by years of data, that there will be a predictable number of declines. If everyone did accept they’d be in trouble! (And occasionally there are more acceptances than expected, which can knock things out of kilter, financially, for students in the following year.
I’m a lurker on a grad school Facebook group in another arts discipline and it’s painful to watch lately as people magnanimously proclaim “I’m turning down offers at XYZ and PDQ. Look for a spot to open up with funding and stipend.” No, there is not a one-to-one correlation because schools also factor in their predicted yield.
I hate it when they make those announcements because it propagates false hope followed by disappointment. Last year my daughter was admitted to some tuition-free + (small) stipend MM programs and to her top choice, which had a good but not full scholarship. She requested and was able to get a full tuition by April 15, but many very deserving students were not, and then had to make difficult decisions about whether to delay grad school or take on more debt. In my daughter’s case it surely helped that she was a known quantity (it was the same school as her undergrad) and that they knew she would have been forced otherwise to go elsewhere. Generally an appeal may increase scholarship by a few thousand, as Hornet indicates. In a few cases, it may be more. It never hurts to ask if you have a compelling reason (other than just wanting to save money–because everyone has that reason) but if you are merely passively waiting for a school to offer a bigger scholarship, intune, that is not likely to occur.
We found this to be true at one school. I was told to check at the end of April to see if enough declines came through. It’s a little sad to give up on your favorite teacher but money does become an issue. I think my son is 95% sure now unless he changes his mind again.lol.
I just finished talking with my son. One thing to keep in mind is the fact that often, with admissions, there is more to a music admission than simply how well you play or sing. For example, one of S’s friends (who plays on about the same level as S) was waitlisted at S’s program but offered 8K more than S was at another known program. Often there is an unexplainable connection between the teacher and the student or the college has an assistantship opening and are looking for a particular skill set to fill that role. Sometimes teachers from different “do favors” for each other by accepting students. Whatever the reason, it is important to find a way to not personalize rejections or low offerings. There is more going on behind the curtain than the applicant is aware of.
Wow, more missing words and typos. My apologies for the hasty posts.
OK, it’s official. My D returned her signed scholarship letter an hour ago and I just paid the enrollment and housing deposits. She is telling her vocal teacher in a few hours.

Yay! Congratulations.
Congrats!
Congratulations to your daughter and you @FriscoFred !!
FriscoFred I will have to be introduced to her in the Fall! Cant wait!
Great news FriscoFred!
Chicago is such a great city–how exciting to attend college there at such a wonderful institution. Congrats to you, too paintbrush22!
These are late, but I have been traveling a lot to make up sample lessons that I could not get at auditions.

Congrats to everyone! can someone point me in the right direction, does anyone have knowledge of BW’s Vocal Performance program? Or know of someone who studies or has studied there for voice? Thank you!
So I made up my final decision and I will be attending Ithaca College for a BM in Vocal performance and music Ed!
