Check this out for a discussion about LW housing:

Someone also suggested that the address entries have been taken down so they can be updated for those that never had one.

Someone called today to ask what happened. I'm just going to quote from LJ:

"Hey guys,

I called the Yale housing office this morning to ask why the great majority of freshmen knew their housing while a few of us got stuck with those horrible "0000000000000000's".
The woman who answered my call explained that there was an error with the phonebook and that yale 09'ers were not supposed to know anything and they were in the process of removing that info from the 09'ers phonebook.

I begged her to share with me what college I'm in as I'm leaving the country tomorrow......no success!

"All the residential colleges are mailing their info out on July 1st"

So that's that.....i don't understand that need for all this "secrecy".....

All the best guys.....try not to tackle the postman :)

~Marianna~ "

There.

BKCat-I heard a rumor that all fifth floor Ldubs rooms were saybrook, regardless of entryway. Is this true?

Well, it all depends on what you want in a dorm. Lanman Wright, due to both its location and layout, is by far the most social dorm on Old Campus. It has its own courtyard, which has four trees that bloom in kazillions of white flowers in the spring. The LW courtyard is also the place where you generally meet people on OC. For example, when I meet friends from other colleges to go to dinner or work on something, we'll meet in the LW courtyard because it's centrally located for wherever you want to go on campus, though it's at the corner of Old Campus.

On the other hand, in comparison to the other OC dorms and colleges, its bedrooms are small and dark. I'm going to perfectly honest with you: LW has the worst housing on Yale's Campus. That being said, it's far, far nicer than housing at most schools. I've been in dorms at UCLA, Berkeley, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Stanford. LW is still nicer than the dorms I've visited in all of those schools. Yale, as a general rule, has ridiculously nice dorm rooms.

Honestly, LW is only a problem if you decide to complain about it (which people do for about the first month, then they get over it). Oh, and be glad that you're not 6'11", like my friend's roommate. He doesn't really fit in his LW room.

Thanks for all the useful info, BKCat.

No problem. Feel free to ask me any other questions that you might have. I know that around this time I had lots of questions about logistical things regarding move-in, so let me know if there's anything you're unsure of.

Yes, I have 2 questions.

1) What can you tell me about JE? Is it one of the worse colleges or one of the better? Is soph/jr/sr housing really that bad in JE? And are unrenovated colleges that much worse than renovated ones?

2) In terms of moving in, if you're doing a preorientation program (i.e. FPC), how are you supposed to move all your things into the dorm? I mean it shouldn't be a problem for me - I live only 1 hr from Yale anyway, but I was just wondering.

I can answer part of your first one:

[/quote]

At Bulldog Days, I stayed in Trumbull, which is being renovated during our freshman year (in other words, it is in worse shape now than JE is). Still, the dorms, in my opinion, were nicer than those at any other university I had been to. Plus, JE will be renovated during the 2007-2008 school year (our junior year), so your senior year, you will get to live in a freshly renovated college. Your frosh housing will probably be good, Swing Space won't be that bad junior year, and you'll only have to live in the unrenovated JE (which is still nice) one year. Hope that helps. :)

Thanks! What is swing space like...do you know? Where is it anyway?

Its on the corner across from Morse and the Payne Whitney Gymnasium. I think its next to the physical plant building.

Hmmm...after doing some searching, I'm not sure if the 2007-2008 renovation thing is correct (although since the YDN website is perpetually down, I can't find much). I had seen a comment from someone on here saying that it would be renovated then, but I'm not sure...

[If it isn't going to be fully renovated, that just means that it's nicer at the moment and doesn't need it. For example, Calhoun is amazing - in great shape, in my opinion, and isn't going to be fully renovated.]

JE: Jonathan Edwards is a beautiful college, with lots of spirit. JEers are very proud of being in JE. In fact, there is a tradition for the Men of JE (only now I think that the women go, too) to march around Old Campus during every reading week, late at night, playing pots, pans, and the odd cymbal. Just to keep people from stressing out too much. That being said, JE's food is apparently terrible. However, I think that this is again a matter of its being terrible compared to some of the best college food in the nation. I've actually never been to the JE dining hall, though, so you'll have to judge for yourself. JE also puts on the Spider Ball every spring, which is a fancy ball with a liquor budget of around $15,000. JE knows how to throw a party. You can only get into Spider Ball if you're in JE or with a JE date/friend, though. I'm going to work on getting in next year.

Non-renovated colleges: Yes, it is nicer to be in a renovated college. Remember, though, that the reason that some colleges were renovated earlier is that they needed renovation more than the colleges that have yet to be renovated. I'm not going to lie, though - the facilities are cleaner and nicer in recently renovated colleges.

Moving in after a pre-orientation program: Don't worry about moving in. I went on FOOT, and moving in isn't a problem at all. The freshman counselors, your suitemates, and a lot of volunteer upperclassmen will be there to help you all move in. Freshman move-in day is like an enormous party across all of Old Campus, only everyone is carrying boxes instead of Dixie cups.

Swing Space: Swing Space, unlike all of the other housing at Yale, is arranged in apartments along hallways. Everyone I know who has lived in Swing Space has loved it, except for the fact that you don't have a dining hall. The apartments are all basically the same: pre-furnished common room (sofa, easy chair, and table, I think), kitchenette, and two bedrooms. If you're a freshman or sophomore, the bedrooms are doubles, and if you're a junior or senior, the bedrooms are singles. I think that's how it works, though I've never been inside Swing Space. Two locations issues: it's across the street from Payne-Whitney, but next to the power plant. Yes, Yale has a power plant. I'm not sure why.

Renovation order:
04-05: Davenport
05-06: Trumbull
06-07: Silliman
07-08: Jonathan Edwards. I'm not positive that JE will be renovated in 07-08, because as far as I know they have only set the renovation schedule through the 06-07 school year. However, after Silliman there will only be four colleges that have not been renovated in the current renovation cycle: JE, Calhoun, Morse, and Stiles. Morse and Stiles, which were built in the '70s, don't need total renovation. Calhoun was renovated in the late eighties, and thus doesn't need total renovation. Morse, Stiles, and Calhoun will all receive partial renovations, though they will be completed during the summer. I'm not sure which summer, though. That means that JE is the only college left, so I assume that it will be renovated in 07-08.

Thank you so much everyone who replied. I'm not sad about being put in JE anymore, although I still have a problem with the food and the motto. About moving in after preorientation, where would I put my stuff? I mean, do I bring it with me TO preorientation, do I store it somewhere, do I synchronize my arrival with the arrival of my stuff? How's it done?

I don't know how it works for FPC, but for FOOT and Harvest (at least last year), you are able to bring only one bag with you. I arrived the night before I was supposed to for FOOT, because I was flying in from the West Coast. If you need to do that, it's really easy - Yale should have something set up with the Marriott. I think that was in the letter from FOOT. Anyway, I was able to bring one suitcase, which had my clothes and supplies for FOOT, plus one more days worth of clothing and toiletries. The rest of my clothes and belongings I shipped via UPS, so that they would arrive at Yale some time in the week that I was gone for FOOT. It's very organized - UPS sorts all of the shipped boxes by your name (I think, or maybe by college), and has trucks and dollys waiting for you on Move-In Day. My parents arrived in the morning of Move-In Day, and got my boxes before I had gotten back to campus from FOOT. However, they said that it was really easy, and I would have had plenty of time to do it had they not gotten there as early as they did.

In short: bring what you need for your preorientation program, and ship the rest via UPS. It will be there waiting for you when you return to campus. Above all, don't stress yourself out about how you'll move in. Remember, there are over a thousand other people in the same boat, so Yale definitely has a system that works. Just enjoy the process of moving into your new home at Yale!

PS. The story behind JE Sux: Yale used to have a tradition of a giant Bladderball game every spring. Basically, the entire student body got drunk and crowd-surfed a giant inflatable ball across campus. (The tradition has since been stopped, because people got overly rowdy.) However, apparently one year a student from JE accidentally popped the bladderball. An angry student started the chant, "JE Sucks!" For whatever reason, JE turned that inside out into a chant of their own, changed the spelling, and it stuck. So when you see someone with a "Sux Et Veritas" shirt, you can be sure that he or she is in JE. The spirit embodied in those shirts is rivalled only by Branford's classy and subtly worded shirts that say: "Suck My Tower."

conwoman, don't be worried about the JE motto! go on the college's website (<a href="http://www.yale.edu/je%5B/url%5D">www.yale.edu/je</a>) and check out the motto's history in the FAQ. it has nothing to do with what it's like to be in JE or anything like that. personally, i wanted to be in JE because i think the motto's hysterical. try looking at it as humorous :)
