Class of '19 Roll Call...who's applied and who's been accepted

I was wondering as time gets closer if there is a way to connect and find a roommate? My son will likely live in the all suite honors housing. Thanks!

@3dogs3kids I’m in the same situation and I’m wondering the same thing… I also will live in the honors housing

Oct 1 put in housing application and deposit. Then later in the year they will indicate the housing electronic access times (the first applicants will have first access). Your student has an opportunity to ‘find’ room-mate matches with their housing system where students put in info on their likes/dislikes, type of housing desired etc. My DD had a HS classmate who agreed to be room-mates, then found two gals that had agreed to be room-mates and all four ‘selected’ each other on the housing system, so they could be signed up for honors dorm with our early access (we were able to assign all 4 to the honors suite). You can read about it online at UA housing, see the kind of dorms. This year the electronic room choices were three days, with first day being May 1 (so all the looking for room-mate and selecting each other needed to be done before then). FYI, the 4 br/2 ba suites are the most expensive UA housing ($4400/semester this year) - and this year the lowest UA housing was $2800/semester.

Noticed that all aplicants are upper level students. Wondering what are chances for son who has a 2.7 GPA and first poor showing of SAT scores of Math 490 and Critical Reading 420? Will be re-taking SAT (studying this time) Oct 11th and first ACT’s Oct 25th.

^^ @1bamamom‌
Your son needs to apply EARLY as Bama is more lenient with early applicants. Bama will not reject him while he has chances to increase his score. Bama may ask for mid-year grades. Bama may ask for a writing sample. Contact your area-rep because that person can also help push thru a borderline app.

Really work with him on the CR score. Sit with him when he does a practice section. You should have the answer key with YOU, along with the book-section that tells you WHY each wrong answer is WRONG, and why the CORRECT answer is right. If his answer is right, also mention/reinforce WHY that answer was the best correct answer. (remember, other answers may be “correct”, but the BEST correct answer is the right one!!! (this mixes kids up)

At first, don’t time the test, just have him do a question, then immediately you check if it is right/wrong. If wrong, look at the book-section with explanations of why that answer is wrong, and why the right answer is right.

If your son guesses between two down-selections, then even if he guesses right, check to see why that is right, and the other is wrong.

Your son may not be finishing his test sections in real time. If so, then figure out why. Is he spending too much time on each question? Does he skip questions because he is afraid to guess even after he narrows down to 2 answers?

As for the math section: SAT math is known for being tricky…which means that while a kid is doing a problem, he may get to a point where he sees his current numbers showing up as an option-choice. He will mistakenly choose that w/o thinking that he isn’t finished or he isn’t giving the answer in the correct form that was requested (decimal, lowest fraction, or something else).

Look up the Xiggi method here on CC…I’ll see if I @xiggi can link it for you. @xiggi‌ where is your method? Thanks a bunch!

Forgot to add a biggie for low CR scores…

Some kids are slow readers because they “silently pronounce” each word in their heads. This REALLY slows down the reading process. Have your child silently read a para and have him think/realize if he is doing that. If so, then he needs to do the following…He needs to practice running his finger quickly under each sentence while just “absorbing” the word in his head, rather than “silently pronouncing” each word in his head. Having his finger move quickly under each sentence will “force” his eyes to keep moving and help overcome that desire to silently pronounce.

My younger son was one of many kids who used to do this. When he was younger, we couldn’t figure out why his reading scores didn’t match anything else. We then learned that he was a slow reader who was doing this “head pronouncing” thing. Once he overcame that, his reading scores went up dramatically.

Also, print out those lists of 100 popular SAT words and 500 popular SAT words and put them by his bed and hang on the fridge (some people post them next to the toilet…ha ha). Have him study 2-5 words everyday.

Thank you SOOO much for the help! I will check out @xiggi.

@1bamamom ^^ I agree with @mom2collegekids - do what you have to do to get your son’s scores up and into college. Sit next to him- I know it is grueling to sit next to a kid, especially after a long day of work. Sometimes I question myself- until I see people like m2ck who has been a devoted mom and is realizing the rewards of her work because her kids are experiencing success.

I also offer this encouragement- my oldest was an extremely average student in high school. She blossomed in college (not Bama, but a big state univ. in FL) and has a wonderful job and life. You are right to encourage your child and be his/her cheerleader.

Good luck!

Any else you’d like to mention: I mailed my transcript out a little later but I am a little worried about my application. I sent a transcript to Louisiana Tech at the same time and I got accepted on Sept 4. I should not have any problem getting into the school with my 33 ACT and 4.0 gpa so I am wondering what is taking so long. Any ideas? I’ve seen a few people that submitted an application later than me and have already been accepted. What is happening?
