@ruchika5107‌ and anyone else:

Have you seen the info about setting up a campus tour and an honors tour?

Before you do visit, first set up the campus tour online…try for an early morning time!

Avoid touring on weekends, especially during homegame weekends. On weekends, there wont be professors to meet and on gameday weekends, the hotels will either already be booked or the rates will be crazy.

Set up your tour here: Page Not Found | The University of Alabama;

DON’T delay setting up your campus tour! The tour is a mix of walking and riding in a small bus, so each tour is strictly limited to the number of seats on that small bus.

In the email to the below listed people, include:
Student’s name and contact info
Date and time of the Campus tour that you’ve reserved.
GPA and test scores (include likely NMSF if applicable)
Likely majors
Career interests (including med, law, etc)
Anything particular that you want to see. If you have an interest in seeing the new Science and Engineering Complex, the TV or radio stations, the B-school or what-have-you, let them know.

Honors Recruitment

Susan Alley
270 Nott Hall
205-348-5599
susan.alley AT ua.edu

Neil Adams
neil.adams AT ua.edu

They will arrange the rest of the day…meeting with faculty, honors people, touring honors dorms, etc.

Sometimes mail goes to their SPAM folders, so call them if you haven’t heard back within a few business days. They do an excellent job and work very hard.

Just want to congratulate and welcome all the newcomers, and put in a little ad for club Men’s Volleyball on my son’s behalf. He is co-president/captain of the team. Any incoming freshmen interested in playing volleyball for Bama are welcome. Team practices twice a week, and plays in tournaments at colleges across the south (fun road trips–paid by Bama). Even qualified and went to nationals in Dallas last year. You get to play a sport for Bama, without the time commitment of varsity, and have a lot of fun. If interested, see their table at Get on Board Day during Week of Welcome, or PM and I’ll put you in touch.

I Played USVBA back in the day and have a 6’-3" son 99% sure enrolling next year…unfortunately, he didn’t get my “Volleyball Genes”…so yea, sorry

Wow, class of 2019 already! Just a recommendation for those of you touring, weekday tours are the way to go.

Summer visits can be good or odd…depending on what is happening on campus. A weekend can seem dead, a summer weekday can be busy if a Bama Bound is going on. Since it is summer, and most kids are gone and campus dining venues are closed/limited hours, it can distort how it would be during the school year.

Fall visits need to be carefully planned to avoid one of the 7 homegame weekends, unless you want to pay super-high hotel rates. lol Also, avoid Fall Break.

Actually visiting any weekend isnt advised because profs wont be around to meet.

I think it can be best to arrive on a weekend (Sat or Sun) and then visit on a Monday. If it is a Gameday weekend, then arriving on a Sunday is still ok because then the hotel rates have settled down again.

When do you think you can visit? When does your child start back at school?

Also…The link to apply to the HC appears once a student is accepted.

Thanks M2CK! I “discovered” UA, in large part, thanks to all you wonderfully informative posts.

S’s HS starts 9/2. It appears that UA starts 8/20? Maybe we could sneak in before school starts for S. Would it be a bad idea to go that first week school starts - are things sort of crazy there the first week?

It’s difficult to go in fall at beginning of week once HS starts since he has heavy M-W schedule. He could afford to miss HS classes, but not sure yet how PSEO prof would feel (sorta depends on prof). Ugh! I tried to get S to go on college tours last year, but at that time he only had eyes for our local flagship (UMN). Now he is open to considering other schools but of course it is it is more difficult to go this year. I really want him to visit other schools because he doesn’t believe me that kids get a “feel” for a place (good/bad etc) and people sometimes surprise themselves once they visit.

Thanks for all your helpful info!

@MomMe32, for what it’s worth, we didn’t visit Tuscaloosa until the end of spring break (ours and UA’s) this past year because there was no good time with my son’s busy schedule senior year. He wasn’t even free for Capstone Scholars Day, which is probably worth planning for ahead of time if possible. (It was held on Jan. 18 this past year.)

We arrived on Sunday 3/31 and spent Monday 4/1 on our official Honors and regular tours. It really was an ideal experience. My son was mentally prepared to give UA his full attention at that point, since he had all his decisions in hand and knew which schools he was actually comparing UA to (including one in MN we visited the following week). And it was really great watching the campus spring back to life gradually over the 36 hours or so we were in town. Tuscaloosa is really beautiful that time of year.

If you can’t get down there until later in the school year, I highly recommend attending a regional recruiting event if there’s one in your area. My son had already been accepted by the time ours took place, but we went anyway “just in case” and were so glad we did. It really helped keep UA in contention for my kid. The online tours are really helpful too in getting a sense of the campus.

My son was also planning to major in mathematics but decided to give engineering a shot. He visited with representatives of both the Engineering and Arts & Science schools while he was on campus, so they can accommodate all your son’s interests if you give them enough time to plan his day for you both. Neil Adams in the Honors College planned our entire day and did a bang-up job!

Good luck!

Thanks Lucie. It is looking more & more like we may end up having to go later in the year here too. it’s helpful to know that UA will help a prospective student start sorting out direction even while on visit. My son keeps flipping back and forth b/t math/econ and math/science/engineering. I think he only really knows math for sure and knows he liked the 2 econ courses he took in HS. Chances are he could end up doing something completely different alongside math.

I don’t know if UA comes to MN. When I called there to find our rep, they gave us a guy based there. He was very friendly and helpful via email and phone. Hopefully now that my son is on the radar, if they do come this way, we would be notified (?)

I have to look at the UA schedule and our schedules here and figure things out. Argghhh I feel so far behind. At least I got him to seriously consider a couple more schools and the first parts of 3 apps are completely in - that’s about as far as we got here.

We’ll definitely contact Neil Adams and Susan Alley before we go for a visit.

That would be fine as long as you dont arrive on the first day - hotels may still be crazy busy with parents helping with move-in.

If your son is considering CBHP, then it could benefit him to meet with Dr. Sharpe prior to applying. A little face-time with Dr. S or Mrs. Batson in regards to CBHP can be a big help (nudge for being selected.)

Does he like the idea of Computer Science? If not, does he seem to have an “engineering mind”?

@Chardo…any talk of making Men’s Volleyball a Varsity sport in the next few years?

^^
Do you mean a NCAA sport? If so, that is highly unlikely because of Title IX.

It is difficult for schools that field football, M basketball, and baseball to also field many other NCAA mens sports because of the Title IX rules.

^ which probably explains why there are so few D-1 men’s volleyball teams.

DS is actually a member of the women’s varsity team. Invited by the coach as a practice player to mimic taller opponents. Had to meet all the official NCAA requirements and everything. So proud of my son, the women’s volleyball player :)
