I was hoping that maybe another women’s sport could be added along with men’s Volleyball…a girl can dream, can’t she lol? I think my S would love Bama when his time comes around but he may want to play varsity vball. @Chardo…congrats to your son, I’m sure the team will benefit from his contribution!! Another question for ya…how hard is it to make the Women’s Club vball team? My D is a 5-10 right side/middle who has played HS and club ball for 4 years. She’s good but not D1 material. Is it super-competitive?

My D is on the women’s club volleyball team. She played 4 years of varsity volleyball in high school but did not play club due to other sport commitments. At tryouts last year she felt like she was the only one there who did not play club. She felt it was very competitive (compared to her high school team) but there are two teams, A and B, and she ended up on B, which she was happy with. They practice together and go to most of the same tournaments. Sometimes they don’t have enough to take two teams so they take a combined team. If your D wants more info PM me.

My D played HS varsity for four years and club for 6 years. Hoping to make one of the club teams this fall!

@Mom2ck - S took AP CSci and doesn’t like it too much. I honestly don’t know if he is engineering type or not or which kind if he was. He a good math student - advanced in math. Hasn’t taken physics yet, but I think he will like it. Didn’t like Bio too much but liked Chem. Liked Micro/Macro Econ. Whether or not some of these classes were his favorite, he did well in all of them and on the associated AP tests.

It sounds like we are going to have to try to get there before winter break so he can meet Dr Sharpe. If school starts 8/20, how long do parents usually stick around to get their kids settled in? If that doesn’t work, is NEA weekend busy for visits there such that we may not get to meet Dr Sharpe? Thanks!

Major: Engineering, likely Chemical

Applying to the Honors College?: Yes

Career goal(s): Several thoughts, but not certain.

Any else you’d like to mention: S2 had been thinking 'Bama since sophomore HS, then S1 older brother (HS class of '14) applied as National Merit Finalist last Fall. Through that process found that he could also qualify for full tuition + with his grades if ACT/SAT scores were high enough. Has now achieved the test score goal so is looking forward to hearing back this Fall. Expect that scholarship would make an OOS 'Bama engineering degree about $40K less than at Ohio State. He isn’t a big buckeye fan and would like to go south for school anyway, so 'Bama is looking great despite some travel costs.

Welcome!

Summer visits can be good or odd…depending on what is happening on campus. A weekend can seem dead, a summer weekday can be busy if a Bama Bound is going on. Since it is summer, and most kids are gone and campus dining venues are closed/limited hours, it can distort how it would be during the school year.

Fall visits need to be carefully planned to avoid one of the 7 homegame weekends, unless you want to pay super-high hotel rates. lol Also, avoid Fall Break.

Actually visiting any weekend isnt advised because profs wont be around to meet.

I think it can be best to arrive on a weekend (Sat or Sun) and then visit on a Monday. If it is a Gameday weekend, then arriving on a Sunday is still ok because then the hotel rates have settled down again.

When do you think you can visit? When does your child start back at school?

Have you seen the info about setting up a campus tour and an honors tour?

Before you do visit, first set up the campus tour online…try for an early morning time!

Avoid touring on weekends, especially during homegame weekends. On weekends, there wont be professors to meet and on gameday weekends, the hotels will either already be booked or the rates will be crazy.

Set up your tour here: Page Not Found | The University of Alabama;

DON’T delay setting up your campus tour! The tour is a mix of walking and riding in a small bus, so each tour is strictly limited to the number of seats on that small bus.

In the email to the below listed people, include:
Student’s name and contact info
Date and time of the Campus tour that you’ve reserved.
GPA and test scores (include likely NMSF if applicable)
Likely majors
Career interests (including med, law, etc)
Anything particular that you want to see. If you have an interest in seeing the new Science and Engineering Complex, the TV or radio stations, the B-school or what-have-you, let them know.

Career goal(s):

Any else you’d like to mention:

GPA 4.0, ACT 33, Violist and fluent in German. Interested in participating in the Orchestra (not as a major). Traveled to Germany, Austria, Vatican City, and Italy, would like to study abroad in Austria or Munich.

I’m getting so jittery waiting for the acceptances to start coming through, now that it’s August…

I agree, it’s horrible waiting for the application to come through, I just want to know!!!

@Amazondotmom Since your son wants to double major, and one of the majors is Eng’g, be sure to list Eng’g as the major so he gets the extra money.

An incoming frosh can’t yet name a second major, but your son can add German right after he matriculates.

I’m just waiting for my transcript to show up on my application. Question, is there an area to put in my extracurricular activities in? I’m not seeing a place to put it.

@chrisf they have it on the scholarship application.

@Phillyy15 do I need to fill that out? I don’t qualify for any merit scholarships based on my GPA. Would the admissions officer see the extracurricular activities in my regular application for admission?

Chris…fill out the scholarship app. If you have a strong test score and a GPA that is a 3.0+, you can get considered for some award…just not an assured one.

edit…you have an ACT 29 and a 3.1 GPA…you may get some award. Submit the scholarship app.
