Class of 2012: Post Questions Here

Hi Justin,

Thanks SO much for your very valuable input to this forum.

My son is assigned to Watson and is heading out to get room supplies. I don't know if you have this kind of info, but thought I'd try:
Do you know if desks in Watson have a deep drawer that would work for a hanging file system? Do you know if the closets in Watson need curtains, or do they have doors? Are the dimensions of the windows available?

No problem if you can't respond; son needs to be on campus a few days early for pep band, so I figure anything he does not have at that point can be procured between then and the regular orientation.

Thanks again and best wishes for your senior year!

jyber209,

The bottom desk drawer is the correct size required of a hanging file system, but there are no metal bars on either side of the drawer to hang folders. You might make it work, I suppose, if your system is self-sufficient.

The type of closet in Watson depends on the room -- some have closets built into the wall with sliding wooden doors, while others have closets built to either side of the entrance door that need curtains. Either refer to the appropriate floor plan (<a href="http://ww2.lafayette.edu/%7Ereslife/floor_plans/index.php%5B/url%5D">http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~reslife/floor_plans/index.php</a> with userID and password) or provide me with the room number and I'll let you know.

Window dimensions for our residence halls are not provided. With that said, every window does come with a retractable blind. If desired, an adjustable shower rod works best to hang curtains.

^^ Thanks a bunch, Justin! Son will check out the floor plan site.

I tried installing the Symantec Antivirus software for Vista on my laptop from the CD that the ITS sent me earlier but I keep getting an error message that says 'This version of symantec antivirus does not support 64 bit platforms. Please install symantec antivirus for Win64 instead.'
What should I do because I have already uninstalled my previous antivirus software and now my computer has no protection.

Ryan,

From the Lafayette website:

<<< If you are using the 64 bit version of Windows XP or Windows Vista, please contact the Help Desk for assistance with Symantec AntiVirus. >>>

You can either email the Help Desk at help@lafayette.edu or call them at 610-330-5506.

FYI, you didn't need to remove your current security software -- that's just ITS baloney. All software is equally compatible with our network.

Did you really think someone would respond to you quicker via Facebook? ;-P

Justin,

Would you happen to know if Freshmen will be mailed their schedules before orientation?
Mary

Mary,

Banner Self-Service PINs were just sent out by the Registrar's Office. With this PIN, one can sign in to the following webpage to see class schedules: <a href="https://bannerselfservice.lafayette.edu:8090/pls/bprod/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin%5B/url%5D">https://bannerselfservice.lafayette.edu:8090/pls/bprod/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin</a>. Those incoming students from the immediate Pa. area received theirs today; others should receive theirs either tomorrow or Monday.

FYI, any course changes can be made by emailing registrar@lafayette.edu prior to Orientation or during specified Orientation times.

A printed schedule will also be waiting for incoming students in their campus mailboxes.

Thank you Justin! You have been a wonderful help!

Justin,
I spoke to someone from the ITS helpdesk last night. He said I can install the 64 bit version thingy when I arrive on campus on monday. Till then I've got a Norton 30 day trial put on so I can still use it for the next 3 days.

And facebook...worth a shot dude. You took 12 minutes. Basu took 27.

Hey, Justin. Is there any advantage of being one of the first ones on campus on Move-In Day? My son wants to get there when it opens at 7 a.m. Maybe he's just in a hurry to leave home!?!?!?!?!?

Minky, I am another parent of a 2012-er and I moved my son in to his dorm room yesterday, because he had to be on campus early due to one of his activities.

I have to say it was delightful doing this possibly stressful process at a quiet time. We were able to park directly in front of his dorm. The dorm custodian dropped by, introduced himself, and asked if he could help with anything. He offered to assist in lofting his bed if son wished.

Anyhow, my reaction is that *if it is reasonable **for your family to be on campus at 7 a.m., do so and hopefully avoid the later crowds. We parked our car by son's dorm and then we walked from there to get him signed in. You will probably be headed to the Farinon Student Center first for the student ID photo and then key card. (I am not *sure about this as my son's instructions were to first check in with his group, but photo and key card at Farinon were what he did next.)

Perhaps your son wants to not feel rushed later in the morning.

Best wishes to your son at Lafayette!

Minky,

Go with everything jyber209 (beautifully) stated. Nothing's better than "beating the rush" when moving in.

Have a safe trip to campus on Thursday.

Justin

I would second everything that jyber209 said. The ease of parking, lack of lines and availability of friendly, helpful staff made the moving in process a breeze yesterday. Even though we had to part with our daughter three days before the rest of the first years arrive it was definitely worth it (and, of course, we'll be seeing her again Thursday when we come down for parents' ornientation).

Grab a premium parking spot as soon as you arrive and head on over to Farinon for the key card and ID.

Justin,

Lafayette Ambassador vs. Soverign...what do u think?

Ryan,

Lafayette Ambassador -- no ATM fee on campus, local branches, account virtually maintains itself.

Hey, are you on campus?

Justin

Justin,
Where do we park tomorrow for Freshmen move-in? I am not too familiar with the campus...my son will be in South Hall...
-Mary

Mary,

There will be Public Safety officers directing traffic upon your arrival. If you get here early enough, you should be able to park along South College Drive to quickly unload. Don't worry -- students will help you unpack the car in no time!

Hey justin,
I arrived on campus on sunday the 17th. Had orientation ever since. I'm in ruef 105. Aren't you an RA in Keefe?

I heard from a few other upperclassmen that the ATM in the farinon basement doesn't charge a fee for soverign...is it true?

Ryan,

Yes, I'm in Keefe 407.

I'm not familiar with Sovereign Bank's rules regarding ATM fees, but from their website, 'Free Student Checking' features "no fees to use other banks' ATMs in the U.S., [although] ATM owners may charge a separate fee."
