Class of 2012: Post Questions Here

Justin,
If I reserve textbooks from the college bookstore and if for some reason I decide to change my courses when I arrive on campus, what would happen with the reserved TB's for courses that I changed ? Would i still be charged for them or would I get another set of books for the changed courses ?

Also, if I decide to loft my bed how can I go about doing that?

Ryan,

As I've said before, there really is no reason to reserve your textbooks. If you already sent in the reservation form and later decide to alter your course schedule, no worries. You can simply return those books you no longer need the moment you pick up your prepared package.

You don't need any special equipment to loft your bed. All beds have rungs which allow you to loft the bed to any number of heights.

Justin,
Thanks for the earlier PM.

How often does it rain out there? Will I need an umbrella or windcheater?

Ryan,

Definitely bring both. It rains a fair amount in all seasons except for winter.

We're very pleased with our son's PT Farinon placement. It seems like an intimate setting for adjusting to college life. A few questions: are the rooms carpeted? closet/wardrobe shared? what's the role of the resident faculty member? as a "wellness" residence, is there a particular student profile?

Also, we live outside Boston and are trying to figure out transportation. Is it true that there is an alumni organization that charters buses to New England? How would we get the details? Would this apply to all school breaks (October, Thanksgiving, Christmas)? Return trip too?

uechimom,

PT Farinon is definitely an intimate setting, where residents become family in little time. The rooms are not carpeted, so bring an area rug. Room dimensions can be found here after log-in: http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~reslife/floor_plans/index.php. Since there are no built-in closets, each roommates gets his/her own wardrobe to store clothing.

Here's some information on the role of the Faculty Resident according to Res Life: Residence Life. Honestly, I don't think they get as involved as they should, but they're always there as a resource if need be.

I wouldn't say there's a common student profile to describe all "Wellness" residents. I would say, however, that most are not interested in the drinking scene, but that should be obvious.

Yes, an alum has set up transportation the past couple of years for those looking to get back to the New England area. I can't remember the details; since it never applies to me, I simply delete the emails. For more information, I'd contact either Alumni Affairs at 610-330-5040 or Res Life at 610-330-5335.

is there a secure place in my room/dorm/sumwhere on campus where i can keep my important documents like my passport or visa papers ?

Ryan,

There is no secure place in a residence hall or around campus to store important documents. You might wish to purchase a mini safe for the papers you mention (for example, see Proteckto MiniSafe).

The most important thing you can do to protect your valuables and personal documents in college is to ALWAYS LOCK YOUR ROOM DOOR. Make sure you and your roommate have a system so that you don't lock each other out.

FYI, 98% of thefts at Lafayette occur when room doors are left unlocked.

It's possible that the ISA Advisor, Janine Block, might have a safe place in her office in Hogg Hall. You might consider asking her for advice.

Do the walk in closets in ruef have a door or some kind of curtain covering them or not ?

Ryan,

There is a shower rod from which you can hang a curtain to cover your closet.

Is this school a party school?

johnbian8308,

I'm sorry to break it to you, but Lafayette's "party school" reputation is over-blown. The label was certainly appropriate back in the 60s, 70s, and possibly the 80s, but since those times, "partying" has had much less influence on the social scene. Still, the reputation remains. I also think our proximity to a well-known "party school" serves to maintain the stigma.

Are there "parties" with alcohol available? Sure, but they're mainly reserved for weekend nights and are concentrated in our (<<gasp!>>) fraternity houses. Other private "gatherings" can be found behind closed doors in student rooms.</gasp!>

It's all pretty standard fare at all colleges, really, so I hesitate to affix the term to Lafayette.

Justin

And NYC is an hour away...always good for partying :)

What exactly is this ALL-LAN cable? I thought all dorms were wireless...so then why do I need a cable

Ryan,

Most students still use the wired internet connection at their desks. The connection is slightly faster and more reliable than the wireless. You are correct that all residence halls currently have wireless, so you may choose never to use the wired connection.

In Ruef Hall, to use the wired connection, you can purchase either an ALL-LAN cable at the College Bookstore or a standard Cat 5 network patch cable with a RJ-45 connector available at any electronics store.

Justin

Justin,
What kind of cable is needed to wire computers at South Hall? (is it also a Cat 5 network patch cable?)
Is a cable needed for TV/video gaming system?
Are curtains needed for the closets in South Hall or are there doors on the closets?
-Mary

Mary,

An ALL-LAN cable is needed to wire computers in South College, which is only available in the Bookstore.

Yes, a standard coaxial cable is needed to hook up a TV. Be sure to sign up for cable TV service if you haven't already (go to https://www.stcservices.com/csp/stc/LafayetteCollege/signup.csp to sign up).

Students in South get wardrobes with wooden doors, so there's no need for a curtain.

Also, if you want to use consoles online (Wii, Xbox, PS2/handhelds) you have to register them through IT Services (look on their website's "How-Tos")

thank you Justin and Haru....
re; banking...
I think that you recommended opening an account with the Lafayette Ambasssador Bank...have people from out of state found it difficult to replenish $ in the on campus account? I was told that $ could only be wired into an account in the event of an emergency...?
-Mary

Mary,

Yes, I definitely recommend opening a 'Free Student Checking' account on the first day of Orientation with Lafayette Ambassador Bank.

I don't see why someone from out of state would have difficulty replenishing an account. I'm not from Pa., and I deposit checks directly into my account. Others may opt to insert either checks or cash into the on-campus ATM to make quick deposits.

I don't know much about wiring $$$, so you might wish to ask a bank representative once you get here. They'll be set up in Farinon to answer questions and open accounts.
