@sophistry: I think a lot of us do have safeties, we just didn’t list them. I just listed my top five, but those are by no means the only schools I’m looking at. The first colleges that came to mind were the ones that I’d like to go to the most, so those are the ones I ended up listing :)

Then again, I guess I can’t speak for everyone considering some people do have incredibly long lists of pretty much all top-ranked schools, so…

^Yeah, I understand. It just irritates me sometimes when I see people who think they have a 100% chance of getting into all these top schools when some of them don’t.

I guess that I didn’t really post any safeties because I don’t dream about my safeties, you know? The only reason I’ve picked the other places I’m applying is because I’m excited to go there and I like thinking about it. I don’t really like planning on a CC thread a year before the fact that I’m going to apply to State school (but I probably will just in case).

Haha I didn’t know if that made sense but I just saw the last post by NJgirl and I’m kinda like…um…that’s what I did…so haha sorry, just sort of explaining why I didn’t have any safeties (although, I sort of consider UVA and Carnegie Mellon my low match…not safeties though)

I came here in Feb of 2009 because I wanted to apply to Simon’s Rock. It is an early college, but it didn’t work out and wasn’t a good fit.

Georgia State isn’t hard to get into, I would at least put UGA on your list. GCSU is a good school in Georgia and it’s my safety, Flagler is my other safety

I know all of the colleges I listed are definite reaches. I just don’t like any safeties enough to list them. Besides Penn State, which is probably one of my least favorite schools, but I’ll be applying there anyway since it’s my state’s best public. I really do love Chicago & Brown, though, and I feel like Macalester and Carleton is less of a reach than the others.

Ahh, I’ve had people try and convince me that it doesn’t matter about going to a top school for undergraduate because with Academic Decathlon we can go to 4-5 schools in the area for free but it’s just the experience, and the people you meet. The Professors, your peers, the campus. It is invaluable. You will be there for four years of your life. Of course, it’s personal choice so there’s no use convincing you otherwise…just voicing an opinion :)

I am not a top student. I have a 3.4 GPA, but I take AP and honors classes. My GPA went up 3 points this year. I don’t have one Ivy on my list and even if I had a 4.0, I wouldn’t apply to many. I like Yale, but that’s it and it doesn’t even have a journalism program. I really like Northwestern, but it is a super reach and I have a mix of schools on my list. NYU, Sarah Lawrence, Vassar, and Villanova are the best fits.

But Georgia College and State and Flagler in St. Augustine, Fl are my financial back ups. It depends on my financial aid packages. If they are all crappy, I won’t be in 100k for ANY college. I want to go to Syracuse U for graduate school because of the unique arts journalism degree. I could go to UGA FREE, but I’m not going somewhere which I will hate. I want to enjoy college, unlike high school. GCSU is the only instate college I will consider, but I really want to go out of state. It may come down to LA VS NY, but location isn’t a big deal.

You will get a great education wherever you go shewas. For some occupations it does not matter where you go, for example teaching. My moms friend went to NYU, lived at home, and became a teacher. She is still in debt in her late 30’s and she ended up going to a tier 4 college for her masters and specialists. It doesn’t matter, she gets more money because of her masters. They don’t care where you go as long as it is credited. PreMed and PreLaw will matter, it just depends on your career. I want the best education possible though.

yea i’m in the same boat as you with less than stellar GPA but with ap/IB courses. i’m thinking about applying to colleges first (Emerson/Columbia College) and bumping up my GPA then moving on to the big ivy league schools

I’m not a sophomore anymore and I’m not in school. Haha! I’m an upcoming junior.

There are schools for everyone Kaitlyn. I’m sure your stats will go up, but I don’t think I have a bad GPA. I am actually quite proud of myself. Most people don’t go to an Ivy League school.
