Son got his appointment in Tuesday's mail!!!! He is beyond thrilled (as are we)! It's interesting though...he interviewed with the senators in October and November...with the congressman two weeks ago and has heard nothing from them. According to one of the senator's office they wait until all the congressmen have their meetings and then work together on their slates so there is no doubling up... and one congressman didn't have his committee meeting until today...so...
Son got his appointment with a ROTC nomination.

Congratulations! You must have been (are) on cloud nine.

After some strings being juggled by my MoC, I got the nom to West Point and the formal appointment should be in the mail any day now.

Hooyamicah: How was your overnight visit? Are you any closer to making a decision?

Our son got his letter in early December and accepted. He had his congressional interview set up for the next week but ended up canceling since he already had an appointment. He apparently got an appointment on a Presidential nomination. He's excited and getting ready. We've been watching this board for awhile and have found it helpful.....finally registered so we could post.

Welcome markerr.

This is such an exciting time - Congratulations to everyone!

hooyahmicah: What did you think of WP?? It's very different from MD, but very beautiful....too bad you saw it at its coldest and gloomiest...we are all waiting to hear your impressions! Will you be changing your name to HUAHMicah?

I am going to West Point for Feb. 4 overnight visit. I will find out for myself in a few days but like mom3boys asked, What did you think of it? I went to annapolis for the USNA summer seminar, but not west point. I hope it is everything I imagine it to be :) I recieved my appointment last week.

Ann and mom,
I really enjoyed my visit. As far as it being at it's darkest and gloomiest, I really liked it. I know I'm from Texas and it was supposed to be too cold for me, but the cold weather was quite nice. After 3 or 4 months of it, my mindset might change, but the freezing weekend was wonderful.

The place is beautiful. It took my breath away every time I went outside. I've always liked the look of the campus, but being there was quite different. The hills, granite buildings, roads, snow, frozen lakes...it was absolutely gorgeous.

On the whole, I suppose I liked the Point. I have rather mixed feelings. I REALLY enjoyed the professors and classes, and the Cadets were all great. Of course, the scenery and weather was right up my alley, too. However, I was not impressed by the food or, much more importantly, the absolute lack of discipline in my company. While I enjoyed some of the goings on, I was outright appalled at some other situations. I had a great escort and enjoyed everyone I met, but on the whole, I was disappointed by the lack of discipline and professionalism that I expected from America's premiere leadership institution.

Every hour I was there, I started to sway closer to Army. On the way home, all the candidates asked me what my thoughts were. I told them the truth: West Point went from being a 2-3% chance to actually having to make a choice, now. Rather than taking .5 seconds to sign the Navy letter (provided I get it), I'll have to think about it for two or three minutes before signing.

With hours and hours of layovers translating into lots of thinking time, I started making lists comparing USNA to USMA. The one thing I kept coming back to is that the career is more important than the school. To that end, the USN/USMC is definitely more up my alley than the USA.

If the DoD hadn't squashed the Interservice Transfers last year, West Point would have a little bit better chance in my mind.

If the Navy offer doesn't come, I'll have no qualms about going to WP, but as long as I have the choice, I think I'll be sticking to my Navy guns.

Hooyahmicah, I am also interested in West Point. I was just wondering what the members of the company were doing that appalled you so much. Just out of curiosity. I would also expect the cadets to be very professional.

That's interesting that you said that...my son found just the opposite. He was turned off by what he's heard about Navy's "cushy, easy" companies. I guess that shows it's everywhere, and depends on your company. I hope that you get what you are after and are able to follow your dreams! Best wishes!!

It definitely does depend on the company. At Navy I was in an easy company and was pretty disappointed how lax things were. At WP I was in a strict company rules-wise, and far beyond lax or cushy enforcement-wise. The rules were there, but the blatant ignorance of them was not endearing for me :)

hooyamicah: You have to understand that the Academies are not "perfect". If you are looking for perfection you will be disappointed. This is the height of gloom period, and you visited over 500th night weekend. The cadets are human and need to blow off steam periodically. The Cows were otherwise occupied and I suspect it was the perfect opportunity for some of the cadets to "bend the rules". Not an excuse, just a possible explanation....
I would caution you not to "settle for WP". If your heart is not in it, turn down the appointment. If a Navy career is your goal, NROTC may be the better choice for you. Good luck with your decision!
