i thought now would be a good time to start a thread for those of us who will be members of the incoming class of 2012 at COW.

for those of you who are attending or have a child that will be attending Wooster next year, have you started your paperwork that's on the new student orientation website?

i've completed everything so far, and i only have the two health forms left to do, so if anyone doesn't understand something i can try and help before you email the College.

they've also posted the required summer reading book selection. this year it'll be "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ismael Beah. i read a sample of the first chapter on amazon and it seems to be pretty interesting.

congrats everyone, see you in august! go scots!

yeah, i was kinda bummed about that too. i like the summary for the one about the ipod and music, sounds very interesting. my flute teacher is the same person conducting it...weird!...

has she recieved any of the Hep B or Menomune shots yet? my mom and i will probably go through our local health department and just designate on the form that we're in the process of completing them...

My D also selected the ipod FYS. Sounds interesting. She has already completed the vaccines. In our state they are mandatory for college dorm living so she received them in December. I was surprised to see they can be waived.

Denise is an excellent instructor. She's very patient and is versatile in her teaching methods that can easily accomadate every student. I've known her for a little over six years. If your daughter gets her FYS class, she'll be in wonderful hands. What is she planning on majoring in?

Who else on here has a student going to Wooster in the fall?

Good to hear. I'm sure the ipod FYS will be a popular one. So...you live locally and have been taking flute lessons with her during your HS years?

D is planning on majoring in Art History/Pre-Achitecture. What about you?

Do you know anything about the Scottish and/or Irish dancing at Wooster? Are lessons available? Thanks.

i live about 15-20 minutes away from wooster. i started in her studio towards the middle of my 7th grade year.

i'm going to be in Music Education, maybe double major with German.

looking at the WooSAS (wooster scottish arts society) page for the dancers, i found this information:

"During the second semester of the school year students are given the chance to learn how to Scottish Highland Dance. Lessons will be given and those who participate will have the opportunity to try out for the Marching Band season. All groups are student directed and are considered to be a part of the Scot Band. Every member brings a different personality and personal input to the group, which makes this program a valuable asset to the campus community where it is a pleasure to be a part of the heritage and history of The College of Wooster.

If there are any questions you have, please don't hesitate to e-mail our Head Dancer, Rachael Federer."

Thank you! I'll pass info on to my D. She will also be studying German at Wooster. Guess she will be taking a placement exam when she gets there. Did you study German in HS? Seems to be an uncommon choice in HS.

awesome, hopefully i will get to meet her. placement exams are taken during the week of Orientation, including those for all foreign languages.

the dept. has a class called Theaterpraktikum. the put on a production of "Der gute Mensch von Sezuchan" (best i could remember for the spelling) around the end of April. the class studies a german play, then as their final exam stage a performance of that same play. it was really good! even though there was a good bit i didn't understand, i got the jist of it.

both of the professors are really nice, my favorite is Mareike Herrmann, the head of the department. my teacher at my HS and her are fairly well acquainted. i was introduced to her and she seemed really excited to meet some of the students to be coming in the fall. most importantly, she made me fairly comfortable even though i don't know that much german (or didn't remember, one of the two lol) and phrased her questions so that i was challenged but yet knew what i was doing. beth ann muellner is equally wonderful. the caliber of their students impressed me.

your daughter can feel free to email me at my new wooster address if she wants. has she, or anyone else browsing this thread, had any difficulties with the new account? i sent a message to IT to make sure i hadn't missed any other stuff they may have sent and also about another issue.
