Class of 2012 Move-In!

I just wanted to take a moment to formally welcome those students and their parents arriving tomorrow (Thursday, 8/21). I hope the move-in process proves to be as pleasant an experience as possible. Rest assured all hands will be on deck on our end!

If you're "lucky," you just might spy this kid in a blue Mets cap walking around aimlessly.

Safe travels to campus.

Today went as smooth as glass -- much easier and less hectic than my own move in day 100 years ago. My thanks and congrats to all.

My son is in Kamine, which seems nice. How popular (and good) is the sandwich shop there?

Minky,

The sandwich shop is packed almost every night because the food is perfect for a late-night snack. Unfortunately, Simon's Cafe only accepts flex dollars, so mindful students try not to go there too often for fear of being "flexed out."

Thanks, Justin. No cash?!?!?!?! That almost seems un-American. If motivated, I guess my son can buy flex dollars on campus -- correct?

Minky,

My bad -- flex or cash is accepted. Just no meals.

If your son wants more flex, he can add to his account at the Cashier's Window on the 2nd floor of Markle Hall with either a check made out to "Laf Col" or a handful of greenbacks.

Thanks again, Justin. I think he'll be a regular customer.

My son is also curious about Resident Adviser positions -- I think he'd be good at it some day. And since we're receiving no financial aid, I'm curious to know roughly what the compensation is for the job. Would you know? When I went to college, RAs received free housing.

Minky,

Being an RA is an awesome experience -- tons of work involved, but well worth the time and effort in my opinion.

One can apply for a position starting sophomore year. The application process occurs later in the Spring semester, and it is always heavily advertised around campus. To read about last year's application process, see: Residence Life.

Compensation amounts to free room & board (about a $10,000 value) and a small stipend that varies depending on years of experience.

We didn't spy a blue cap but were informed that you were the orange shirt. Great to see a face to go with all of the great insights you've been sharing... and nice to know you aren't always at your keyboard. Overall we were very impressed with move-in and the orientation program. There certainly is a great sense of community and our son is excited to be part of it. Thanks for everything.

uechimom,

I was wearing a gray Res Life shirt for move-in. Who said orange?

And, no, I'm not always at my keyboard. I know, a big surprise.

Best,

The move-in experience went smoothly. Son seems so happy with the room, roomate, and all the kids on the floor. I felt comfortable leaving.
I didin't even cry until my car broke down on the highway going home,
it was quite unexpected but I did make it home eventually, with a tow truck.
Very lucky it didn't break down on the way there.........
Have a great year. I think I may need to change my screen name to 1moretogo. :)
