Sending loads and loads of pixie dust to your D today, ActingDad!!

Acting Dad, I know you were at the Hartt school the same day I was, and now you have the same date for Purchase. I follow all the theater threads but have never posted. My daughter is applying for BFA acting, we still have to audition at Rutgers on Sunday, Ithaca on the 2nd of Feb, university of Illinois Urbana on the 15th of February an Pace we don’t know a date yet. (She is uploading the pre audition tomorrow)
She is deferred at Emerson and rejected at Hartt.
What time is she scheduled at Purchase? We’re at 12

Anyone applying to CalArts? I’d like to know more about their audition process (I’ve read tons of threads, but wondering if anything has changed this year).

The CMU Audition Report:

The danger of sending your daughter to CMU’s six week summer program is that she becomes emotionally attached to a school that is almost impossible to get into. Somehow my argument falls on deaf ears that if she had gone to the Rutgers, BU or NCSA programs she might feel the same emotional attachment to those programs.

As to the audition itself, she thankfully held up okay from a health standpoint. She stills feels quite weak and has some dizziness but adrenaline is a powerful drug. Her big fear going in was what if I she didn’t get to see Barbara Mackenzie who by all accounts is THE decision maker. The auditions ended up Barbara and one other teacher doing the auditions. Half the kids would go to one and half the kids would go to another. As luck of the draw went, she started with Barbara. She felt like she had a good connection with her and got some positive feedback. She did 3 monologues for her plus she was asked to sing. Then, she was sent to the other teacher where she did two of the monologues plus was asked again to sing.

She felt good about the way she performed the pieces so I think that is all you can really ask of the process. After that, it is out of her hands.

As to CMU generally, Ill have to second all the positive comments Ive read over the years about how CMU conducts the auditions. Barbara has a very nice way about her. She doesnt hide the fact that it is so difficult to get into CMU. Repeating a lot of advice here on CC, she encourages everyone to case a wide net and note that there are lots of talented kids that CMU cant take. When she says she is rooting for each kid, you really do get a sense of how genuine she is. Then, she backs up with how much time CMU spent with each of the kids auditioning. There was no sense of hurrying the kids in an out. Many saw both Barbara and the other faculty member. Many did three monologues and a song like my daughter. One of my daughters pieces takes a bit for her to come out of it before moving to something else and Barbara was very understanding. Just a very professional way of doing things.

In response to ClaresMom’s post – yes, my daughter is in the same 12 O’clock slot for Purchase. My daughter is at Rutgers on Sunday as well. We have our master sheet of times on our home computer so not sure of the time at Rutgers. Best of luck to your daughter! I will send you a PM next week with some identifying info so we can say hello if we spot each other.

Milkshakespear. Just came back from auditions nothing has changed same process same results some get breathing exercise and cards to set up tours ,some do not.

Well, it sounds like your D did her best at the CMU audition, ActingDad. And going in sick is hard to overcome. Good for her!

The attachment part is difficult (from doing a summer program). I didn’t see that coming with my own S, and the fact that these kids also make wonderful friends who are all auditioning just adds to the emotional attachment. My husband had a better thought on it, though, reminding me that S would make just as many friends at whatever program he ended up in. But I’m sure it feels more comforting for the kids to start out on this crazy adventure knowing their peers and professors (this Barbara, in your D’s case).

I am really looking forward to the PURCHASE report from ActingDad and ClaresMom, and anyone else. Purchase looks to be such a bargain compared to others, and has such a great rep - hope all goes well there!

Is anyone going to the NY Unifieds? We have had a very long reprieve from auditions and are getting geared up for the final weekend for my son. The Falcons lost so sadly we are not rearranging our travel plans home!

actindad, I am so glad your daughter had a positive experience. Hope this repeats for all this weekend.

Photomom5 – there is a thread not that long ago of people going to NY unifieds. My daughter will be there though my wife booked the parental gig to drive an hour and stay in a hotel for 3 nights as opposed to my usual gig which is driving 5+ hours each way and staying in a hotel for one night.

ActingDad, glad to hear your D’s day went well despite the sickness. Attachment to a school is so difficult to avoid, especially if, in your D’s case, she has spent considerable time there. I wish her the very best. I know that pull CMU can create!

After the CMU disappointment, my D has tried really hard not to bond with any school. She knows it will all boil down to her wants her and who can give the most aid. Of course it’s easy not to connect to a school when you aren’t there visiting. As we head into our long stretch of visits and interviews it may be more difficult not to attach to a school.

Marbleheader – I think your husband is absolutely right that a big part of the attachment comes from having achieved some comfort with knowing some of the teachers and students. My daughter was even thrilled when we drove by the Starbucks she used to go to over the summer! When everything is so scary about this adventure, just a little bit of familiarity makes a big difference.

Heading to Purchase on Friday at noon also. Just wondering what the kids should wear for movement auditions? Do they change from their audition outfit? And do they wear dancers clothes? Any comments on what has been seen at other auditions would be really helpful.

ActingDad, sounds like the CMU audiiton went well inspite of being sick and the audition judges do know they are under the weather and appreciate the effort. Wish her well.

Photomom, we’re going to NYC Unifieds–but just doing one school, DePaul, on Friday. Will be in the city and in the same neck of the woods as the studios on Saturday too, and my son has a friend auditioning on Saturday, so we may be try to meet up with her. Which schools are you doing (if you already mentioned it, I’ve forgotten, apologies!)?

Looking forward to hopefully meeting actingDad and mom2gals on Friday. Purchase is the one school we haven’t visited so I’m looking forward to checking it out, I’ve heard mixed reviews on the school but great things about the BFA.
I can relate to what everyone says about getting attached to one school, my daughter did RSAC last summer and now loves Rutgers. We live pretty close so the idea of going there didn’t appeal to her before that, it didn’t feel like “going away” to school. She also has an idea that she’ll have an advantage there, even though she knows the odds and really probably doesn’t! Anyone else here do RSAC 2012?

times3 (and sorry, actingdad, I forgot about that thread which is pretty sad since I am the one who started it…age and stress, that is what I am going to blame!!!), my son is auditioning for Julliard on Friday (I fully expect him to not get a callback so we will have a free day after he finishes) and on Saturday, Emerson, Montclair and U of Arts. Sunday is UNCSA and then home…

I will be wherever my son wants me to be…

mom2gals – where do you see a reference to a movement audition in the Purchase materials? I see a reference to a warm up in the material but not anything that says a movement audition. Movement per my daughter would be without shoes so her current audition outfit which is some kind of stockings/leggings thing would not work. But its very loose fitting and fine for a warm up which would be more like stretching to my understanding.

Looks like we are expecting significant snow on Friday! Not sure what to expect and at what time but there may have to be adjustments to Fridays schedule at Purchase :(

I saw the snow report. We were hedging on whether we needed to stay in a hotel the night before but this is pushing us to book a hotel close by on Thursday night to avoid driving on Friday.

^^We’re taking a similar approach to our Hartt trip this weekend–leaving VA on Thursday after school and driving up to Pennsylvania, so we’re only a few hours from Hartford. The snow predictions are still such a moving target, but hopefully we’ll miss the worst of it…and hopefully the auditions will take place regardless!

We are staying with friends nearby Purchase on Thu night since I just can’t take any chances and then we are driving to Philly for U Arts and then driving back to friends in Westchester area to go in and out of city onSunday to do Cal Arts in Manhattan then its back to the city again next weekend for 3 days of auditions all near Penn Station in Manhattan. Only one is actually at Unifieds: Point Park since we want to actually visit as many schools as we can since we hadn’t done that last year.

ActingDAd and Claresmom, I look forward to meeting you both, I’ll find Acting Dad and we can hang while waiting for the kids if you like. I just saw the word freedom of movement for the attire for the auditions. Looks like there is no specification of a movement audition. I was also kind of having a senior moment here, and I’m sorry to alarm anyone that there may have been a “movement” audition when it doesn’t appear to be something like that. But we will be there for noon rain, snow or sleet, we’ll be there! Drive safely. I’m trying to figure out what kind of contraption to bring for cd recording. All these kids have their music on Ipods/touches whatever. So are they bringing speakers for Ipods??? I’m so not ready for this. What do you guys recommend we do for the music?

^^Mom2gals, we needed a “contraption” for just one of my son’s auditions and didn’t want to invest a lot–got a very basic Phillips dock/speaker for around $20 from Best Buy. It’s designed to work with iPods or iPhones, but my son used it with his iPad–it fit and got pretty good volume! If you don’t need wonderful sound, it’s a decent bet. I did see kids there with CD players (small boom boxes) too, but we were happy to travel light.
