Congrats, Prodesse! Terrific news!!

Congrats to your son, prodesse!! I was very interested to hear your description of the new acting chair there. So excited for you guys!

That is wonderful! It’s time to start the Class of 2013 Acceptance Thread!!

Waiting on pins and needles here Marbleheader… I have as many body parts as I can crossed!!!

Oh… how could I forget…you too Ugadog!!!

Holy Cow - this has been such an emotional week!

He went to see the Hobbit last night at midnight with friends and I picked them all up at 3AM, so I had no sleep today - and spent most of the day on the verge of tears! So glad they didn’t wait until tomorrow to get the acceptances out.

Fingers crossed for everyone else chewing their fingernails!

Just heard from my S that we owe you huge congrats–then I saw your update–CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D

Just such a relief for us.

But I still feel anxious for all of our other kids on this thread - and throughout CC! Hope to hear more good news from others tonight as well.

YAY!!! SOO happy for you Marbleheader!!! I can’t wait to hear all about it next year. Just made plane reservations to visit NY and Boston in March… maybe your S can show my S around next Fall. What a happy ending!!Go enjoy your evening and weekend now!

A huge congratulations!!! Nice to hear some good news today!

^Ditto! :-)

Fabulous news, Marbleheader! SUPER CONGRATS to your son!!

I know in the grand scheme of things that a denial is nothing really, but my D was denied to CMU. I’m having a difficult evening, but she appears to be taking it in stride. Of course, she isn’t the most emotional kid, so I’m sure it hurts worse than she is showing. :(

On the flip side, she has an interview tomorrow for Point Park. Fortunately, it is at a local high school, so we don’t have far to travel. That’s good because I now see a bunch of travel in our future.

Stay strong Ugadog, her school is coming! And congrats Marbleheader.

Just peeking in to wish everyone well. Congrats to Marbleheader and S & Prodesse and S. So nice to get thumbs up!!! And ugadog, I’m sending you and your D extra resilience. Such a tough time! But the right school will be there for her so keep strong. My S2 is a theatre design kid and I know how great she’ll feel next year. But waiting and wondering is never easy.

ugadog99, so sorry to hear it! But good news will be coming along soon. I don’t mean to belittle how you feel-- all of us here have walked a mile or more in those shoes, and we know how much it hurts.

Congrats to Marbleheader and Prodesse.

ugadog99 - I hope today is a little better for your D. Maybe it’s good to have the PPU interview today, so she can’t linger on the no from CMU. She will find her place!! PPU was one of my favorites, but S didn’t want to go that far away to school.

Not to hijack this thread, but Point Park’s theater department has enjoyed its portion of controversy within this forum. I’m particularly interested in opinions with regard to the BFA in acting program there. I’m specifically referring to the audition required at the end of the second year so that one may “continue” on through the BFA program. Of course, most if not all schools have re-auditions, juries, etc on a regular basis throughout the course of the four years, but I’d like any comments with regard to the PPU situation. It seems a little murky based on my own research. Thanks for any help!

OddDad, let me see if I can explain how it was told to us today from PPU. Understand that my D is tech, so she falls in a different category, but I was listening. So, if I understand this, as a freshman, all MT and Acting kids are classified as BA students in theatre. (Supposedly, they would have the exact same classes as a BFA freshman would if there were such a thing there.) Then, at the end of freshman year, you audition to move from the BA to the BFA. He said you would have two opportunities to audition to move over to BFA. If after the first audition you didn’t make it then you would receive feedback and critique to work on the weaknesses and try again. What I don’t remember him saying was when that second chance was given. For tech kids, they are automatically in a BFA track.

The person who seemed to be in charge of the day was the Director of Artistic Recruitment. He was a very pleasant person and made an effort to keep everyone involved in the day. When we first registered for the interview months ago, we were assured there would be tech interviews today. Well, not so much… Through a series of emails and phone calls we were told to have digital copies of her prompt books, which we did. Earlier yesterday we thought there would be a tech professor onsite for the interview, but she ended up talking with a ballet instructor who has “some” tech experience. He was impressed with my D’s portfolio, but we didn’t have a digital copy of that to send. So, he will take back all of her materials and there will be either a Skype or phone interview in January. I’m kind of frustrated because if I had understood this, I would have planned to actually be in Pittsburgh for a face to face interview. Oh well, we may still end up trying to squeeze a visit in sometime. On the upside though she was the only tech kid today and every PPU person there knew she was coming and was looking for her.

At the question/answer session, the Recruitment guy talked about the deposit and how it wasn’t due until May 1. Of course, having read here about issues with that, my ears perked up. He made it sound as though your place would be held until the May 1 deadline with no problem, like it is supposed to be. That is in direct conflict with some of the experience others have reported, but that’s what is being said. He did say that the longer you wait to send the deposit the less chance of getting the exact housing you want. But, that is true of all universities.

One final thought about PPU. When we were in Pittsburgh for that other school, we were able to see PPU’s “Seven Guitars.” It was AMAZING, really! We were so impressed with the quality of acting, the set, lights, you name it-it was awesome. I will also say that we saw a show at another school and were more impressed with PPU. I have also read glowing reviews of their “Crucible.” Their Conservatory puts out some pretty impressive work.

Now, I have a question for y’all. How do I go about creating a digital version of her portfolio? It is too big to scan on our scanner at home. My older D has a scanner at her work but it doesn’t scan color. Any ideas?

Hi ugadog99,
Another Georgia tech theatre mom here (and former Scenic Artist before have 3 kids in 3.5 kids changed my focus a bit…) Do you have a good relationship with her high school admin and theatre teachers? Some of the massive all in one copier/printers that schools use have the capacity to scan up to 11x17 in color and convert to pdf, even if the printer/copier function is only black and white. Otherwise - Kinkos. Good Luck to you and your D.

Ugadog99—Thanks for all your comments! However, one correction. It does say on the Point Park website that auditioning into the BFA in acting program takes place at the end of the sophomore year. There is the necessary 3.0 GPA and theater faculty approval. I’m unsure which I prefer for my D, audition after the first year or after the second. I wonder if the 2 chances to which you referred are compressed into a relatively short period of time at the end of year two. I suppose a phone call or email can answer that question. Your mention of the Crucible caught my attention. Last month my D’s high school performed that play…they and she did a wonderful job. It’s one of her all time favorite plays. Thanks again for the information.
